Colombia opened the scoring in the ninth minute following an individual effort by midfielder Richard Ríos down the right flank. Ríos delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where forward Luis Suárez anticipated his marker and directed a powerful header past goalkeeper Raúl Rangel to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
