Rafael Márquez debuted as manager of the Mexico national team with a 1-1 draw against Colombia in an international friendly played on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. Early Breakthrough for Colombia
Colombia opened the scoring in the ninth minute following an individual effort by midfielder Richard Ríos down the right flank. Ríos delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where forward Luis Suárez anticipated his marker and directed a powerful header past goalkeeper Raúl Rangel to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The match marked the start of a new phase for the Colombian side under manager Néstor Lorenzo, who played without James Rodríguez and Juan Fernando Quintero.
Mora Equalizes in the Second Half
Despite controlling possession for long stretches, Mexico struggled during the opening half to break down a disciplined Colombian defense anchored by captain Dávinson Sánchez. El Tri came close in the 32nd minute when Mora orchestrated a buildup that culminated in Roberto Alvarado hitting the right goalpost with a crossed shot, followed by Luis Chávez striking the horizontal crossbar on the rebound.
The breakthrough arrived in the 62nd minute. Jesús Gallardo delivered a long, chipped pass to Mora inside the penalty area. The young midfielder eluded central defender Jhon Lucumí with a sharp turn and fired a shot past goalkeeper Álvaro Montero to make it 1-1.
Tactical Adjustments and Substitutions
Both managers utilized the friendly fixture to test squad depth and introduce new personnel in the second half. For Mexico, Hirving “Chucky” Lozano tested Montero early in the half before an offside call nullified the chance.
