The Hong Kong men’s baseball team secured a 7-5 victory over the Philippines in their final placement match at the Asian Games in Nagoya, closing out their tournament run with a win. For a national program long separated from the continental elite of Japan, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei, the result marked the first time Hong Kong has defeated the Philippines in a senior-level international competition.
Breaking a Decade-Long Drought
Entering the match, Hong Kong faced a challenging tournament arc that included an opening-round loss to Thailand after holding a 7-2 lead, alongside expected losses to regional powerhouses South Korea and Chinese Taipei. A subsequent placement-round defeat against Palestine left the squad searching for a turning point in the final fixture against a Filipino side they had not beaten in a decade.
Catching for Hong Kong, 27-year-old Lam Lai Him reflected on the program’s trajectory after the final out. Ten years prior, Lam and teammate Kwok Ching were part of the under-18 squad that defeated the Philippines at the Asian U18 Baseball Championship. That youth victory served as a psychological anchor for the senior team in Nagoya.
“Every time, we were the ones sitting in the dugout watching the Philippines raise their flag in celebration,” Lam said. “Can there be a time when it is us celebrating in front of the Hong Kong fans in the stands? Now this is just the first step. Hopefully, we can beat the Philippines again at the Asian Championship in December and win the championship.”
Turning Points in Nagoya
The final match tested Hong Kong’s resilience early. The team fell into a 2-0 deficit through the first three innings before capitalizing on Filipino fielding errors in the fourth frame to spark a rally. Contributions rolled down the batting order as Wu Tsz Tung, Chan Sze Yu, Ma Hon Man, Chan Cheuk Kiu, and Fung On Sang each drove in a run, while Lam added two RBIs to build a 7-2 lead through the top of the seventh inning.
The Philippines responded in the bottom of the seventh by narrowing the gap to 5-7, echoing Hong Kong’s earlier pool-play collapse against Thailand. A timely rain delay halted play, giving the Hong Kong coaching staff a chance to regroup. Following the resumption, young pitcher Fong Phem Hei—a student at a high school in Taiwan—took the mound. In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Fong picked off a runner at first base before striking out the final batter in the ninth to seal the 7-5 win.
Looking Ahead to December
With the Asian Games campaign concluded, the Hong Kong baseball program turns its immediate attention toward the upcoming Asian Championship scheduled for December. The roster features a mix of veterans balancing full-time jobs with evening training sessions and younger prospects gaining competitive experience in Taiwan.
The victory in Nagoya offers the program tangible momentum as players and coaches prepare for the next continental test against familiar regional rivals.
