Franziska Koch secures bronze in time trial at road world championships

At the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, German cyclist Franziska Koch secured a bronze medal in the individual time trial, reinforcing her upward trajectory in elite international racing and shifting expectations within the national squad. Her performance arrives following a high-profile season that included a victory at Paris–Roubaix in April and three consecutive national titles in the road race, capped by her first national time-trial championship in late June.

Surprising the Peloton

Speaking to the ARD following the event, Koch addressed her podium finish by noting that her results continue to shift perceptions within the sport.

“I believe I have surprised others even more than myself,” Koch said.

Her transition to the professional team FDJ United-Suez has coincided with a string of top-tier results, transforming her status from an emerging contender to a dependable podium threat in both one-day classics and time trials.

Setting Sights on Saturday

The German national squad enters Saturday’s demanding women’s road race with clear ambitions. Women’s national coach André Korff outlined the team’s overarching objective ahead of the 180-kilometer event, which features 2,570 meters of vertical elevation.

“We have a team that is flexible, and we will certainly use that,” Korff said. “Our goal is and remains a medal. I think that should also be our claim.”

Climbing Strength and Tactical Depth

The roster combines climbing strength and tactical versatility. Antonia Niedermaier, who finished second overall and won the youth classification at the Giro d’Italia, joins Liane Lippert as a core climbing option capable of dictating the pace over the course’s challenging ascents.

“It is definitely a demanding course,” Niedermaier said regarding the Montreal route. “But we are also really a good team here. I think we are all good at climbing and can make a difference.”

An Elimination Race in Montreal

Lippert anticipates a grueling tactical battle given the profile of the terrain.

“It is like a classic course. I expect an elimination race,” Lippert stated, adding her confidence in the collective strength of the lineup. Should Koch manage to stay with the main contenders over the climbs, her finishing speed positions her favorably for another podium contention in a field that includes top-tier international talent such as Demi Vollering of the Netherlands.

Racing Without Radios

The race dynamic is further complicated by the unique characteristics of World Championship competition, where riders compete without race radios and traditional trade-team support structures.

Last year’s road race saw Canada’s Magdeleine Vallières secure the world title in a chaotic edition of the event. As the 25-year-old Canadian returns to defend her jersey on home soil, attention centers on whether established specialists like Koch and her German teammates can capitalize on the race’s unpredictable structure.
