Tarik Biberovic is officially making the jump to the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks after several seasons of high-level development in Europe, marking the fulfillment of a long-term career ambition. Acquired by Dallas during a six-team mega-trade finalized in July before inking a two-year contract, the 25-year-old forward steps into the North American professional league ready to deploy his perimeter shooting skills.
Transition to Dallas Facilitated by Front Office Familiarity
The transition to the NBA has been smoothed by existing relationships within the Mavericks organization, most notably with general manager Mike Schmitz. Biberovic noted that his longstanding connection with Schmitz created a comfortable environment for his arrival in the United States.
«I know Mike Schmitz since I was very young, because he is one of the best at evaluating players,» Biberovic said. «He knows everything about European players. So for me, it was a sort of comfort zone.»
Before finalizing his move, Biberovic also spoke with team president Masai Ujiri after Dallas secured his draft rights, conversations that further solidified his desire to cross the Atlantic. «My dream has always been to commit to the NBA and to the Dallas Mavericks organization. They stepped up and gave me this chance, and I am very happy to be here,» he stated.

«I think it will translate the same way as it was in Europe, even better. I’ve been here for a month. The style of play and the speed are something I prefer, something I like,» Biberovic said. He also credited the coaching staff and veteran teammates for easing his day-to-day adjustment. «With the great advice from the staff that we have here, the players who have been here before me and those who have played here, I think and believe it will go very well,» he noted.
Early Professional Roots in Turkey
Biberovic’s path to the NBA was forged through a demanding early start in European professional basketball. He spent the bulk of his career in Turkey with Fenerbahçe, where he was thrust into high-stakes competition as a teenager.
Reflecting on those formative years, Biberovic recalled turning professional at age 14. «At 14, 15 years old, I was playing practically with adult men,» he said. Describing the unforgiving nature of that environment, he added: «Nobody cares if you’re young or old. If you can play at that moment, you play. If not, you’re at the end of the bench and you wait for your chance.»
That rigorous crucible taught him the value of veteran leadership early on. «Better to learn from the mistakes of others and then make your own. These things help you mature a little earlier than your age group. Personally, I am very grateful for the path I lived,» Biberovic concluded.
