Dallas Mavericks Sign Veteran Dwight Powell to Training Camp Deal

Powell enters training camp as the only player brought in by Dallas beyond the 15 athletes already holding standard NBA contracts, alongside three two-way players. Because the standard roster is currently at capacity, the franchise must clear a spot if they intend to retain the veteran for the regular season. Reporting from NBA insider Marc Stein indicates that team leadership has not ruled out creating a roster vacancy for Powell before opening night.

Longevity and Franchise Records

As the longest-tenured player on the roster, Powell is positioned to fight for his 13th season in a Mavericks uniform. Originally acquired in December 2014 via a trade between Dallas and Boston involving Rajon Rondo, the Canadian center has carved out a place in the franchise record books. Over 12 seasons and 768 career games (266 starts) split between Boston and Dallas, Powell has averaged 6.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 17.5 minutes per contest.

Among all-time franchise leaders in Dallas, Powell ranks fourth in career field goal percentage at .606, fifth in games played with 763, sixth in offensive rebounds with 1,187, sixth in total rebounds with 3,251, and 10th in blocks with 330.

Training Camp Opportunity

While Powell’s on-court role has diminished in recent years, his leadership and daily work ethic remain valued within the organization. During the previous season, teammate Cooper Flagg highlighted Powell’s dedication, referring to him as a “vrai professionnel” impressed by his constant preparation. With center Dereck Lively II sidelined and unavailable for the start of training camp, Powell has a direct window under the staff of Dusty May to prove he warrants another campaign in Texas.
