The 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals opened on September 22 at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center “Spring Cocoon” Gymnasium, bringing eight of the world’s top women’s national tennis teams to Shenzhen for the premier international team competition in women’s tennis. Running through September 27, the tournament marks the second year the event—widely known as the “Women’s Tennis World Cup”—has been staged in the southern Chinese hub under a three-year hosting agreement launched in 2025.
Shenzhen Hosts the World’s Best

Formerly known as the Federation Cup, the International Tennis Federation rebranded the team championship as the Billie Jean King Cup in 2020 to honor Billie Jean King and her contributions to tennis and gender equality. On September 24, the Chinese national squad faced the defending champion Italian team, led by team captain Zheng Jie.
Honoring a Legacy of Equal Play
Ahead of the tournament fixtures, sportswear brand Adidas and the Billie Jean King Cup organization co-hosted a panel discussion titled “Women and Heritage,” focusing on the athletic pursuits and breakthroughs of female tennis players across generations. The dialogue drew on historical milestones, referencing King’s 1973 appearance in blue Adidas tennis shoes that broke traditional all-white dress codes, alongside her victory in the landmark “Battle of the Sexes” match later that year.

“When I played, women’s tennis had very little attention, and players had to constantly fight for equal tournament opportunities,” King said during the event. “Now, this sport has more and more audiences and stages, and that is the meaning of what I have promoted for many years.”
Next-Generation Voices and Leadership
Sun Xinran, who won a junior Grand Slam title at the 2026 US Open, attended the event and spoke about the impact of athletic role models during her training schedule. Zheng Jie, a two-time Grand Slam women’s doubles champion, noted the evolution in training structures and international exposure available to younger players.
A Surging Domestic Racket Sport Economy
The tournament arrives amid rising domestic participation in racket sports across China. According to basic dataset figures released by the Tennis Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, the nation’s tennis population reached 25.18 million in 2024, representing a 28.03% increase from 2021. Female participants grew from 45% to 47% of the total demographic, with young women emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments. Industry analysis indicates that the growth stems from a combination of professional tournament visibility, international breakthroughs by Chinese athletes, expanded digital media coverage, and localized facility development.
Guangdong province currently ranks first nationwide in both total tennis participants and court infrastructure. Commercial partnerships have also accompanied the sport’s expansion. Adidas serves as the official apparel partner for the Shenzhen finals, supplying uniforms for ball kids, match officials, and staff, while maintaining sponsorship ties with professional players including Wang Qiang, Wang Xinyu, and Sun Xinran.
