The Judo-club du Cap in Plouhinec has officially opened its doors for the new season at the community dojo, facing a decline in enrollment that threatens the long-term survival of the local institution. Frédéric Ansquer, a state-certified judo and jujitsu instructor with 48 years of experience in the discipline, warned that shifting youth interests and low adult participation have left club numbers in a precarious position.
A Steep Enrollment Decline Threatens Plouhinec’s Dojo
Shifting Youth Habits and the Demand for Rigor
Last season, the club registered ten children in its introductory “éveil judo” program alongside fourteen judokas aged over seven. For the current term, enrollment dropped to just nine children. Ansquer pointed to changing youth habits as a primary factor behind the dip, noting that younger participants increasingly struggle to commit to a single sport for multiple years. Combat sports, in particular, demand high levels of rigor and perseverance to master complex techniques.
Three Years Without Adult Training
Compounding the challenge for the Plouhinec club is a persistent shortage of adult participants. According to instructor figures, the club has lacked enough adult practitioners for three years to sustain even a single weekly adult training session. Founded in 1976 within the Cap-Sizun region, the school now faces an uncertain future unless local families step forward to reverse the trend.
Structured Disciplines Tailored for All Ages
To attract new members, the club offers a range of structured disciplines tailored to different age groups. The éveil judo section welcomes children aged five and six, focusing on motor skills, physical coordination, and foundational Japanese terminology unique to the sport. Separate classes cater to children and adults practicing traditional judo, while adolescents and adults can join ju-jitsu self-defense sessions. A taïso section also provides general muscular conditioning without added weights.
Schedule and Registration Details for the New Term
Training sessions take place on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays starting at 5:00 p.m. at the dojo managed by the Cap-Sizun community of communes. Families seeking more information or looking to register can contact the club by phone at 06 67 20 88 54 or via email at [email protected].
