For VfL Hameln, the trip to Nienburg represented a rare and significant test on the state-wide stage. “A participation on this level has not happened for our team for a long time,” said head coach Carsten Lehmann, emphasizing the magnitude of the tournament for the club’s development program.

Doubles Pairings Deliver Upsets Against Top Seeds

The standout performances in Nienburg largely came through the doubles and mixed divisions, where Hamelns’ unseeded pairs outperformed expectations. Relying on disciplined court positioning, high stamina, and strong communication, the young athletes eliminated several higher-ranked opponents in closely contested matches.

In the U17 boys’ doubles, the pairing of Niko Markus and Joshua Richert battled through a demanding bracket to secure a fifth-place finish. In the U17 girls’ doubles, Finja Koch and Julia Markus finished sixth after a series of competitive encounters.

Additional success followed in the mixed categories. Joshua Richert teamed up with Finja Koch to take fifth place in the U17 mixed bracket. Meanwhile, Christian Kuhles and Nadja Bondarenko combined for a ninth-place finish in the highly competitive U19 mixed division.

“Twice a fifth place as well as a sixth place in the high-class field of the state championship are a truly fantastic result that the entire team can be proud of,” Lehmann said of the doubles results.

Nadja Bondarenko Reaches U19 Semifinals

The premier individual result of the weekend belonged to Nadja Bondarenko in the U19 women’s singles draw. Utilizing precise shot-making and steady focus through successive rounds, Bondarenko advanced all the way to the tournament semifinals.

She dropped a hard-fought match in the penultimate round, ultimately securing a fourth-place finish. “The joy about this top placement was huge in the entire team,” Lehmann noted regarding the achievement.

In the U17 boys' singles division, teammate Joshua Richert put together a strong campaign of his own, winning several matches in a crowded draw to finish in eighth place.

While the state championship highlighted the current capabilities of the roster, coach Lehmann acknowledged that the squad still has ground to cover before challenging for the absolute pinnacle of the state. The team plans to translate the tactical lessons and competitive exposure gained in Nienburg directly into their upcoming training sessions.

The club’s youth program will use this tournament as a foundational milestone, returning to regular practice to build on their technical skills step by step.
