An attempted car break-in in the San Lorenzo neighborhood of Palermo was thwarted by police after an attentive local resident intervened using a digital reporting tool and provided authorities with a photograph of the suspects. Law enforcement officials confirmed that a 21-year-old Palermo resident was arrested at the scene on charges of attempted aggravated theft in complicity, while two other suspects managed to evade capture.

Real-Time Alert Through YouPol App
The incident began when a resident noticed suspicious activity involving a parked vehicle along via Carta in San Lorenzo. Rather than simply watching or ignoring the scene, the witness utilized YouPol—a mobile application designed for real-time communication with law enforcement—to alert the local police station. Along with the text alert, the witness transmitted a photograph capturing three young men near the vehicle. One of the suspects was distinctly identifiable in the image due to a baseball cap he was wearing.
Upon receiving the alert through the central operations room of the Questura, officers dispatched a patrol car to the specified address. Arriving at the location, police units spotted three individuals dressed in dark clothing actively attempting to break into a parked Fiat 500L.
Punctured Door Pillars and Recovered Gear
When the patrol car pulled up, the three suspects attempted to scatter. Officers successfully intercepted and detained the 21-year-old suspect, while his two accomplices fled the immediate area. Subsequent inspection of the targeted Fiat 500L revealed significant damage caused during the break-in attempt. Investigators found that the door pillar had been torn open, the lock cylinder damaged, and the cover of the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port removed.
Expanding their search of the surrounding streets in San Lorenzo, officers located a second damaged vehicle nearby. In that instance, the vehicle’s ignition cylinder had been knocked out of alignment. Right next to this second car, police recovered the baseball cap worn by the suspect in the citizen’s photograph, which was immediately seized as evidence.
House Arrest and Direct Trial Pending
Based on the physical evidence recovered at the scene, the witness report, and the suspect’s presence during the intervention, investigators formally charged the 21-year-old with attempted aggravated theft in complicity. The young man has been placed under house arrest while awaiting a direct trial proceeding, known locally as the rito direttissimo.
