La Facultad de Ciencias del Deporte at the San Javier campus has finally opened a dedicated sports pavilion, ending a 20-year wait for a facility on site. The 2,500-square-meter multi-purpose infrastructure resolves a long-standing demand for 1,200 university students and over 70 local sports clubs in the municipality.
Since the campus welcomed its first students two decades ago, academic groups had to travel off-site to the Polideportivo de San Javier for practical activities, a journey that cannot be made on foot. The newly opened complex changes that routine by providing immediate access to modern training and research spaces right at the university grounds.
Funding, Construction, and Operational Dualidad
The project represents an investment of 2,7 million euros. Financing was secured through a collaborative agreement involving the regional government—known as the Comunidad Autónoma, which contributed 47 percent of the budget—alongside the Ayuntamiento de San Javier and the Universidad de Murcia (UMU), with co-financing from European FEDER funds.
The facility operates on a dual-use schedule designed to serve both higher education and the surrounding community. During morning hours, the building hosts teaching, learning, and research activities for university students. In the afternoons, its doors open to support grassroots sports development across the local area.
Layout, Facilities, and Technical Specifications
The interior features a main parquet floor court equipped with a mobile and divisible tiered seating system. This configuration allows multiple disciplines—including basketball, futsal, volleyball, and badminton—to take place simultaneously without scheduling conflicts.
An adjacent building expands the complex’s capacity by housing a 170-square-meter gym and a 170-square-meter tatami room. These spaces are complemented by multi-purpose classrooms and specialized laboratory areas dedicated to sports science research.
Externally, the project includes site urbanization, a direct connection to the campus football field, dedicated parking areas, and a stormwater management system complete with a filtration storage tank.
