The cult indie film Yakyu do Ahou Miboujin (Baseball Dumber Widow) concluded its three-year theatrical run following a special 3rd-anniversary screening event titled “THE ORIGIN OF KABUKEN” held at Cinemahouse Otsuka.

A Retrospective of Underground Works
Organizers confirmed that the retrospective event marked the final chapter for the indie feature, which first debuted in 2023. The festival showcased the film alongside earlier works by the “Kabu Kenkyukai” production collective, as well as student projects from director Koichi Ishikawa—known for Long Hot Summer Vacation and Kenko Chienowa Trampoline Classroom—and screenwriter Masahiro Yokotani’s independent film Skayama-kun to Toromura-kun.
Logistical Hurdles and the Dohou Crew
Despite opening-day logistical hurdles, including a delayed venue opening and technical glitches during screenings, organizers praised the dedication of attendees. The fan base, known as the “Dohou Crew,” weathered the disruptions without major incident, allowing the retrospective to proceed as a celebratory reunion.
New-Wave Panels and Gaiden Screenings
The event also featured appearances by new-generation film writer Kenji Yamato alongside various directors and cast members who participated in discussion panels examining the future of eccentric cinema. The program included screenings of the Kabu Kenkyukai’s new release, Yakyu do Ahou Gaiden Shigeyoshida, which creators admitted to viewing with initial anxiety before receiving a warm reception from the audience.
From Empty Rooms to Packed Audiences
Reflecting on the milestone in the venue’s lobby, filmmakers noted the stark contrast between college screening rooms from their student days and the auditorium in Otsuka. Organizers described the gathering as a therapeutic release that helped resolve long-held creative frustrations from their university years.
An Open-Ended Hiatus
While past announcements regarding the film’s conclusion have frequently preceded unexpected return engagements, production representatives maintained that this marks the beginning of an extended hiatus. No concrete timeline has been established for any potential future screenings, leaving the project’s long-term schedule open-ended as the creative team steps away from the title.
