First-Set Battle Gives Way to Müller’s Dominance

For the opening half-hour, the match remained tightly contested. Trading games up to 3-3, Kouame stayed within striking distance of the world No. 135 and even faved off two break points at 2-2. However, the momentum shifted decisively in the seventh game when Kouame dropped his service. From that juncture, Müller took control, conceding just one more game to seal the victory in roughly an hour and a quarter.

Kouame struggled mightily on serve during the later stages of the encounter. The teenager finished the match with six double faults against only four aces, landing just 59 percent of his first serves and winning a mere 39 percent of his second-serve points. Müller, struggling through his own slump on the main tour, capitalized on the opening, successfully fending off three break points at the start of the second set before cruising to the finish line.

Stakes and Tour Context for Both Frenchmen

The defeat serves as a steep learning curve for Kouame, who captured the attention of the tennis world earlier this year with a strong showing at Roland-Garros. Ranked No. 191 in the ATP rankings this week and mentored by Richard Gasquet, the young prospect arrived in Chengdu following a semifinal run at a Challenger event in Phan Tiet, though followed up by a loss to Mexico’s Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez.

For Müller, the straight-sets victory snaps a six-month drought on the ATP main tour. His last tour-level win came at Marrakech, where he reached the quarterfinals before falling to Rafael Jodar. Having slipped out of the top 100 amid a stretch heavily reliant on Challenger matches and qualifying rounds, Müller advances to the round of 16 to face Italian lucky loser Federico Cina.

Mannarino Also Advances in Chengdu

In other matches at the Chengdu tournament, fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino secured his spot in the second round. Mannarino advanced past Chinese wildcard entry Juncheng Shang on a 7-6, 6-2 scoreline, keeping the French presence alive in the singles draw.
