Czech goalkeeper Marek Kalina has received a record 20-year ban from football and a 500 000 českých korún fine (necelých 20 500 eur) from the Ethics Committee of the Football Association of the Czech Republic for extensive match-fixing and corruption. The disciplinary action concludes a systematic, multi-year betting scandal that also saw lower-tier clubs demoted and police criminal investigations launched across the sport.
The Disciplinary Ruling and Maximum Sanctions
The 29-year-old goalkeeper was punished for 11 distinct disciplinary offenses committed over a five-year period starting in 2021. Ethics committee chairman Martin Holub detailed the severity of the case in comments to iROZHLAS.cz, noting that Kalina operated primarily within the third-tier club Zlínsko.
“When I put it simply, things could hardly get much worse, and therefore that maximum penalty,” Holub said regarding the decision to impose the strictest possible sanction.
The committee concluded that Kalina’s offenses were carried out systematically and continuously for financial gain. Investigators found that personal enrichment through corruption served as a primary driver for the player’s actions on the pitch. Beyond the Czech lower leagues, Kalina’s career included a brief stint during the 2024/2025 season where he made six appearances in the Slovak second division for MŠK Považská Bystrica.
Bribery, Live Betting, and Wider Scandal Context
Investigators established that Kalina accepted multiple bribes ranging between one and two thousand euros from club official Pavel Býma. The payments were designed to influence match outcomes for Zlínsko through the goalkeeper’s on-field performances. Investigators also found that Kalina actively coordinated the placement of live bets on those compromised fixtures in November of last year.
The wider match-fixing ring first surfaced publicly in March, triggering parallel criminal investigations by Czech police alongside the sports association’s ethics proceedings. Authorities have brought criminal charges including fraud, bribery, and the legalization of proceeds from criminal activity. Detectives have additionally implicated certain suspects in participation within an organized criminal group.
The sweeping fallout from the investigation has severely impacted Czech football infrastructure. Zlínsko was administratively relegated to the lowest division just two weeks prior to the ethics committee’s ruling. The scandal also ensnared top-flight club Karviná, which faced exclusion from the premier division as disciplinary measures rippled through the domestic pyramid.

With the ethics committee concluding its proceedings against Kalina and issuing the landmark suspension, attention shifts to ongoing police prosecutions and separate disciplinary panels reviewing other implicated officials and clubs.
