Path to the Under-63kg Gold Medal in Halle
The tournament opened with a bye for Günther, setting up a sequence of elimination matches against regional opponents. According to match accounts, she secured her first win against Hauschild from Bavaria before overcoming Lorke from Baden-Württemberg in the subsequent round to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinal match, Günther defeated Kolbinger, also representing Baden-Württemberg. She then met Maneck from Potsdam in the final, securing an early victory that underscored her authority within the division.
Strong Showings Across the SSF Bonn Delegation
Günther’s club, SSF Bonn, fielded several athletes who delivered notable performances during the competition. Nele Anhalt, another 14-year-old competitor in the under-63kg category, fought six times on the mat and secured four victories, ultimately finishing fifth after a grueling day of matches.
In the under-44kg category, Leia Deeb entered as a division favorite. After receiving a bye and defeating Möllmann of North Rhine-Westphalia, Deeb advanced to the final against Wandel from Lower Saxony. Following a contested sequence involving video review by the tournament’s jury regarding the timing of a counter-technique, the decision went to her opponent, leaving Deeb with the silver medal.
Men’s Division Results and Placement Matches
In the boys’ competition, Serob Serobyan competed in the under-73kg division. After winning two initial matches, Serobyan reached the semifinal, where he surrendered a lead in the final seconds of the bout. A similar outcome occurred in his bronze medal match, resulting in a fifth-place finish.
Orestas Norys competed in a crowded 25-fighter field in the under-60kg category, winning his opening match before dropping a closely contested bout against the winner of the Duisburg scouting tournament. Taha Mabrouk rounded out the delegation’s appearances in the under-81kg division, reaching the small final after working through the repechage before falling short of the podium.
Collectively, the results established the judo department of SSF Bonn as the most successful club from North Rhine-Westphalia at the Halle tournament.
