Inaugurating the tournament, Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla emphasized the importance of competitive pathways for developing elite competitors. “We do understand that champion is created from this kind of platform,” Shylla stated during the opening ceremony, as reported by regional coverage. The minister noted that Meghalaya’s sports budget has expanded from approximately ₹40 crore nearly a decade ago to ₹844 crore, with allocations directed toward infrastructure improvements and athlete support programs.

Additional welfare measures announced by the state government include a ₹2 lakh cash incentive for gold medallists at the National Games, dedicated stipends for the final National Games squad, and coverage for sports-related injuries under the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme. Furthermore, the state maintains the Meghalaya Outstanding Direct Appointment Policy, which provides medal winners with direct government recruitment opportunities and up to 10 years of flexibility to balance their education and athletic careers.

Prominent Contenders and Regional Talent

The competition has drawn several high-profile athletes from across the region. Assam’s Ashmita Chaliha, recognized as the first Indian shuttler to capture a Korea Masters title, attended the opening phase and praised the quality of the venue and local preparations. Speaking to participants, Chaliha advised competitors to focus on performance rather than outcome. “Enjoy what you play, give your absolute best on the court without taking the pressure of winning or losing, and the results will naturally follow,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mizoram’s H. Lalthazuala arrived in Shillong following a victory in the men’s singles division at the Cameroon International 2026. Lalthazuala expressed optimism regarding Mizoram’s team depth and acknowledged the hosting state’s efforts in supporting visiting athletes.

With the 39th National Games approaching in 2027, the four-day regional championship provides participating state federations with a critical evaluation window.
