Borussia Mönchengladbach Sacks Coach Eugen Polanski After Winless Start

The swift managerial change arrives during a turbulent start for the traditional club. Mönchengladbach currently sits in 18th place in the Bundesliga standings with a goal differential of 3 goals scored and 12 conceded. Sport-Informations-Dienst (SID) and Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported the dismissal alongside official club confirmations.

A Winless Opening Stumble in the Bundesliga

The pressure on Polanski mounted rapidly across the first three fixtures of the campaign. To open the season, Gladbach dropped a 3–0 fixture away against RB Leipzig. That loss was compounded by a 3–4 home defeat against newly promoted SV Elversberg before the 5–0 rout at Freiburg’s Europa-Park Stadion spelled the end for the technical staff.

“Despite a good preparation and positive approaches, the team has not managed to achieve the desired results in the Bundesliga,” explained Borussia sporting director Rouven Schröder in comments reported by Deutsche Presse-Agentur. “The performances shown recently have led to the decision to relieve Eugen of his duties with immediate effect.”

Alongside Polanski, the club also released assistant coach Tobias Trulsen. Schröder had handed Polanski a contract running until 2028 back in November 2025, but avoided offering an unconditional vote of confidence immediately following the final whistle in Freiburg. “You only have one game left, then you have a three-week international break. And you don’t want to go into the international break with zero points,” Schröder told reporters after the match.

Polanski’s Emotional Departure and Second Stint

Polanski took over the head coaching post last season—also following three matches—as the successor to sacked manager Gerardo Seoane. He steered the team to a 12th-place finish out of 18 clubs at the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign.

Reflecting on his departure, Polanski shared an emotional statement regarding his exit from the club. “Borussia Mönchengladbach was and remains my club. That’s why it hurts so terribly that it has come to this now,” Polanski said, as reported by Sport-Informations-Dienst. “We had planned a lot, but we didn’t get it implemented. I’m sorry about that.”

Mönchengladbach faces a critical test before the upcoming international window. The club hosts Mainz 05 on Saturday at Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach before the Bundesliga pauses until competition resumes on October 11.
