Emergency medical personnel and a team doctor stationed at the game immediately attended to Barnett, attempting to resuscitate him on the field, according to William Jewell interim president Drew Van Horn. Paramedics transported Barnett to a local hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead.

Van Horn told ESPN that all athletes participating in the athletic program must undergo routine physicals. The interim president confirmed that he was unaware of any underlying health conditions affecting the junior running back prior to Saturday’s game.

Nathan Mulch told ESPN that the local medical examiner will perform an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death. Van Horn indicated that the school will evaluate whether further institutional investigation is necessary once the medical examiner completes the autopsy.

Barnett was a local product from Liberty, Missouri, who starred during his high school career at Liberty North. During his senior year at Liberty North, he rushed for 1,450 all-purpose yards and scored 20 touchdowns, carrying his team to a state title.

Entering his third season with William Jewell, Barnett had his 2025 campaign shortened by an injury. Even with the missed time, he finished that season with 366 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Across two seasons with the program, he appeared in 13 games and accumulated six total touchdowns.
