Tragedy Strikes During Season Opener in Liberty

The sudden medical emergency occurred on the sideline just minutes after Barnett scored a touchdown in the first quarter, giving William Jewell a 7–0 lead. Emergency personnel administered treatment at the scene before rushing him to a hospital, where his death was officially confirmed. Following the incident, game officials immediately suspended the contest before eventually canceling it.

Academic and Athletic Background at William Jewell

Barnett was a junior business administration major at the college in Liberty. Prior to his collegiate career, he played high school football at nearby Liberty North High School. During the last season with the Cardinals, he appeared in five games before suffering an injury that prematurely ended his season.
