The potential transfer of Youri Baas from Ajax to FC Porto has encountered a major stumbling block as the two clubs failed to reach an agreement on a financial package, according to recent reports. The 23-year-old defender had emerged as a primary target for the Portuguese club, where former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli is currently at the helm.
Porto’s Financial Hurdles Stall Deal
However, financial constraints at Porto and a firm stance from Ajax have left the deal on the verge of collapsing.
Cruijff Holds Firm Under Contract Terms
According to Voetbal International, Porto currently lacks the necessary financial resources to meet Ajax’s straight transfer demands, leading both sides to explore alternative financial structures. Those proposals ultimately proved insufficient for the Amsterdam club.
With Baas still under contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA until mid-2028, technical director Jordi Cruijff is under little pressure to compromise on the club’s valuation.
Farioli Reunion Frustrated
The versatile defender had hoped for a reunion with Farioli, the Italian coach under whom he experienced a major career breakthrough during the 2024-25 season.
Having established himself as a central figure in Amsterdam over the previous two campaigns—making 39 and 42 appearances respectively—Baas saw his status shift during the summer transfer window.
Defensive Hierarchy Shifts in Amsterdam
The arrival of manager Míchel and seasoned defender Daley Blind altered the defensive hierarchy within the squad. Blind emerged as the immediate first-choice option on the left side of central defense.
While Baas has featured in five matches across all competitions this season—starting four of them—he remains the second option when Blind is fully fit. Furthermore, internal plans at Ajax point toward young defender Dies Janse as the designated long-term successor to Blind, pushing Baas further down the pecking order to third choice.
Valuation and Transfer Priorities
Footballtransfers notes that Baas holds an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of roughly 18.2 million euros, a sum that could provide Ajax with significant financial flexibility. Rather than generating a heavy burden on the wage bill, a potential sale would primarily serve to fund further squad adjustments.
Reports indicate that Ajax retains priorities to secure a replacement on the left wing following the departure of Mika Godts, alongside potential reinforcements in the right-sided central defensive department.
Uncertain Outlook Before Deadline
Despite the breakdown in talks with Porto, Baas’s long-term future in Amsterdam remains uncertain. According to Voetbal International, his absence from the starting lineup against Telstar was a deliberate tactical choice amid mounting transfer activity at the club.
Unless another suitor steps forward with an offer that satisfies Ajax’s asking price before the transfer window closes, Baas will remain an Ajax player as the season continues.
