The 31-year-old Portuguese international signed a contract with the Lisbon club running through June 2030, which includes a 50 million euro release clause, according to Benfica’s official club disclosures. The transaction brings closure to a drawn-out negotiation window after the player spent recent days in the Portuguese capital completing medical examinations.
Financial Hurdles and Finalizing the Transfer
While both clubs had reached a preliminary agreement on general terms earlier in the week, final paperwork stalled due to outstanding financial details between Bayern Munich and the player’s representation. Despite those minor snags, Palhinha traveled to Lisbon ahead of the weekend to undergo his medical tests.
Bayern Munich sporting directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund ultimately moved to secure an immediate sale after evaluating alternative options. The Bundesliga giants previously rejected a loan offer with an option to buy from Premier League side Aston Villa. While the 14 million euro base fee falls well short of the roughly 50 million euros Bayern paid to acquire the player in the summer of 2024, the club recouped funds for a squad member who no longer fit under head coach Vincent Kompany’s tactical plans through 2028.

Although the midfielder remained open to a loan move to Aston Villa during early discussions, he ultimately prioritized a permanent return to Portugal.
