The NBA Basketball School in Puerto Rico has officially expanded its youth training program at the Colegio Universitario de San Juan to include children starting at six years of age, according to local reporting from El Nuevo Día and regional sports outlets.
Operating through its second semester, the initiative brings official National Basketball Association coaching methodologies and structured player development frameworks directly to younger athletes across the island. The expanded curriculum accommodates participants ranging from 6 to 18 years old, grouping them into six progressive developmental stages designed to build foundational skills, physical conditioning, and tactical court awareness.
Structured Progression and Coaching Standards
Each tier addresses specific athletic benchmarks, running from basic motor skills and biomechanics for the youngest participants to high-performance decision-making and competitive mental preparation at the Élite level.
To maintain instructional quality, program organizers enforce strict coach-to-athlete ratios, limiting groups to between eight and ten players per instructor. All participating coaches complete training through the official NBA coach-licensing platform, ensuring standardized instruction across all age divisions.
Continuous Evaluation and Digital Tracking
Throughout the semester—which runs through Dec. 11—athletes undergo continuous on-court evaluations measuring ball-handling proficiency, shooting mechanics, reaction speed, and overall physical agility. Progress is recorded through digital badges that verify skill milestones, while families receive comprehensive semester reports detailing each athlete’s athletic development.
In addition to regular weekly sessions, the program scheduled a Thanksgiving Camp running from Nov. 23 through Nov. 25. That camp focused heavily on game-based scenarios, modern court spacing principles, and close-range finishing techniques for athletes spanning the full 6-to-18 age spectrum.
Expanding the Island’s Basketball Pipeline
Reporting by Radar Boricua highlights that the program’s broader push into early-childhood sports training aligns with the league’s goal of fostering talent within regions possessing rich basketball traditions. By introducing structured training formats at age six, organizers aim to build long-term technical foundations for Puerto Rican youth before they reach competitive school and club levels.
