The continuous layering of synthetic decals and the aggressive chemical compounds inside their glues have progressively compromised the metal surface of the historic structure, forcing facility operators to intervene before the winter weather sets in.

Over the decades, travelers have plastered uncounted numbers of stickers across the monument, forming literal “annual rings” of foreign material over the exposed metal.

Data from the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn confirms that these adhesives actively eat away at the structure’s surface integrity. The damage has reached a threshold requiring immediate, specialized maintenance.

Helicopter Airlift and Forge Restoration

To reverse this localized wear, maintenance crews have locked in a concrete timetable.

A helicopter transport is scheduled for November 10 to airlift the landmark safely down into the valley. Once grounded, a specialized art forge will strip the accumulated debris, meticulously grind the exterior, and re-apply a fresh protective gold plating.

A Dedicated Backup for Tourists

Management hopes to prevent a repeat of this heavy wear through a new diversionary tactic.

Back in July, operators installed a secondary duplicate cross safely inside the Zugspitzbahn bergstation. This designated backup fixture offers tourists an approved canvas for photographs and sticker placements.

By channeling visitor interaction away from the primary alpine monument, management aims to slash dangerous congestion and erratic behavior near the precipitous summit ridge.

Winter-Ready Deadline

The original summit cross will be removed on November 10, with workshop restoration kicking off immediately afterward.

Operators intend to finish the refinishing process and return the golden landmark to the 2,962-meter summit prior to the full onset of winter weather operations.
