Yasuhiro Yamashita Opens Up on Wheelchair Life and Heat Shock Accident After Spinal Cord Injury

Yasuhiro Yamashita, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic judo gold medalist and former president of the Japanese Olympic Committee, has spoken publicly about the heat shock incident that left him with severe paralysis below the neck. In a television interview broadcast by TV Asahi on the 21st, Yamashita detailed the 2023 accident in Hakone and explained his ongoing rehabilitation and decision to return to academic life.

The 2023 Hakone Hot Spring Accident

The accident occurred on October 29, 2023, while Yamashita was serving as the JOC president. During a private day trip to a hot spring in Hakone, he was sitting at the edge of an outdoor bath.

Yamashita recounted the moments leading up to the fall to interviewer Shuzo Matsuoka. “I found out later it was heat shock,” Yamashita said. “I was sitting at the very edge of the open-air bath. I told my son, ‘I’m getting out soon,’ and when I tried to stand up… my consciousness just cut out completely.”

Unconscious, he plunged approximately two meters down a cliffside. The fall resulted in severe trauma to the cervical spine located at the center of his neck. Yamashita spent two years hospitalized, undergoing two separate surgeries, which included grafting bone from his hip into his cervical vertebrae.

Current Physical Condition and Rehabilitation

The severity of the cervical spinal cord injury has left Yamashita with near-total paralysis below the neck. He explained that he currently retains sensation only above the neck and in a portion of his left hand. Despite these life-altering physical limitations, he maintains a rigorous rehabilitation schedule.

“It might be another part of my destiny,” he said regarding the accident. “I think I was able to accept reality more than people around me might imagine.”

Academic Return and Public Resolve

Explaining his decision to appear on television in a wheelchair, Yamashita emphasized a sense of personal responsibility. “My life was spared. What does that mean? I will borrow help from various people, but thinking about the meaning of what I can do is my duty, having survived with just a thread of life left,” he stated.
