Russia’s Central Election Commission has authorized the socioliberal Yabloko party to run in the upcoming legislative elections scheduled between September 18 and 20, according to election officials. The decision makes Yabloko the only political formation explicitly advocating for an end to the war in Ukraine to appear on the ballot for the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly.
An Unexpected Approval Amid Strict Control
The surprise inclusion of Yabloko caught observers off guard in a political landscape where elections typically function as bureaucratic procedures to legitimize the ruling regime. According to Central Election Commission secretary Natalia Budarina, the electoral body validated 269 aspirants while continuing to review other candidate claims. Out of eleven parties that applied to run, nine have successfully registered so far.
Founded in 1993, Yabloko maintains a historically low baseline of popular support and advocates for integration with Europe. Yet its sudden spot on the ballot transformed the early campaign dynamics. Nikolai Ribakov, one of the party’s co-leaders, celebrated the unanimous vote by the electoral commission in a social media statement reported by regional coverage. “For the first time in five years, Russian citizens now have a real opportunity to vote for peace and freedom, to support a legal and safe ceasefire agreement,” Ribakov stated.
Exclusions and High-Profile Disqualifications
Despite the party’s authorization, Ribakov himself remains barred from competing in the September ballot. Election authorities disqualified him due to “extremism offenses” tied to public condolence messages and supportive statements following the death of opposition figure Alexei Navalni. Yabloko thus occupies a precarious space on the ballot left vacant by other prominent opposition figures who faced outright bans.
Among them is Boris Nadezhdin, who challenged Vladimir Putin in the 2024 presidential race before being barred under similar extremism charges for distributing Navalni-related content online. Political analysts note that while Yabloko is listed on the ballot, it poses no serious electoral threat to President Vladimir Putin. Observers suggest the regime may leverage the party’s presence to project a veneer of pluralism while the ruling Rússia Unida party comfortably secures a broad parliamentary majority.
Youth Mobilization and the Opposition Response
Following the Central Election Commission’s registration, opposition figures mobilized rapidly, almost unanimously urging voters to back Yabloko. The party’s visibility surged online, particularly among younger demographics seeking an outlet to register discontent. This sudden digital wave transformed an otherwise managed bureaucratic exercise into a focal point for anti-war sentiment.
The upcoming vote carries an additional logistical shift: for the first time, residents living in Ukrainian territories occupied since the launch of the invasion in October 2022 will be eligible to cast ballots in the Russian legislative races.
