Vittorio Pomilio was born in 1933 and represented the Italian national team between 1957 and 1960, earning 19 caps and playing at the 1957 European Championship in Sofia. His club career included stints with Stella Azzurra Roma, Società Cestistica Mazzini di Bologna, and Libertas Pescara. During the inauguration, Pescara Mayor Carlo Masci referred to the location as “point zero” for local basketball, noting its deep ties to generations of players.
Community Support and Modern Infrastructure
The revitalization effort replaced a old hoop in disuse and worn surface with modern sports infrastructure. AbruzzoLive reported that the facility now features high-resistance, draining, and anti-slip flooring built to official FIBA standards, alongside regulation backboards.
Funding and backing for the playground came through a coordinated effort involving Simone Fontecchio, his family, the city administration, and the NBA Players Association. Municipal authorities confirmed that the public improvements extend beyond the basketball court itself.
