The 11th Gyeongsangbuk-do Association President’s Recreational Basketball Tournament concluded its two-day run on August 9, bringing together roughly 550 athletes and team officials from across the province for competitive play in Gimcheon, according to local reports.
Gimcheon Hosts Provincial Basketball Festival Across Three Venues
The competition, which ran from August 8 to August 9, was hosted by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Basketball Association and organized by the Gimcheon Basketball Association. Financial and logistical backing came from the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial government, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Sports Council, the City of Gimcheon, and the Gimcheon Sports Council, as detailed by the Gimcheon Shinmun.
Games were split across three distinct facilities to accommodate the schedule: the Gimcheon Indoor Gymnasium, the National Sports Center, and the Badminton Stadium. A total of 500 players and 50 team executives made up the 550-person contingent participating in the weekend schedule.
Opening Ceremonies Feature Exhibition Matchup
Action tipped off on the morning of August 8 with an 11 a.m. opening ceremony at the Gimcheon Indoor Gymnasium, followed by competition split into high school and general divisions, according to tournament organizers.
Local and regional dignitaries, including representatives from the Gimcheon city administration, the provincial and city sports councils, and the provincial basketball governing body, attended the opening program to address the participants and mark the start of the competition.
Division Champions and Individual Honors Crowned
On the court, competition in the high school bracket culminated with Gimcheon Yeonhap A capturing the tournament title, accompanied by a certificate, a trophy, and a 500,000 won cash prize, according to reports from the Gimcheon Shinmun. Chilgok Fevers took runner-up honors and a 300,000 won prize, while Sangju High School and the Gumi Selection team tied for third place, each earning a 200,000 won prize. Han Woo-jae of Gimcheon Yeonhap A received the high school division Most Valuable Player award.
In the general division, Gumi Flow A secured the championship trophy, a certificate, and 500,000 won behind strong team coordination. Goryeong Yeonhap finished as the runner-up with a 300,000 won prize, and Sangju Sambaek Sports Club alongside Yecheon Arrows rounded out the podium by sharing third place, each taking home 200,000 won. Lee Seung-min of Gumi Flow A was named the general division MVP.
Association Leadership Emphasizes Community and Grassroots Growth
Kim Dong-yeol, president of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Basketball Association, addressed participants and supporters during the weekend events.
