LeBron James backs VJ Edgecombe for all-defensive team

LeBron James anticipates that VJ Edgecombe can develop into an elite defender capable of competing for an NBA All-Defensive Team selection as early as this season. Speaking alongside Steve Nash on the Mind The Game podcast, James outlined high expectations for the young guard following his transition to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The four-time NBA Most Valuable Player discussed Edgecombe’s potential after observing his rookie campaign and gathering feedback from people within the Philadelphia organization. James pointed to Edgecombe’s physical profile, noting that his athletic traits, wingspan, and speed provide the necessary foundation for immediate defensive impact.

“There’s no reason that he shouldn’t be able to vie for a All-Defensive Team from this season on if he really wants to, given his athleticism, his wingspan, and his speed,” James said on the podcast.

Learning From Veteran Leadership in Philadelphia

To maximize that potential, James suggested that Edgecombe learn closely from teammate Jaylen Brown. While identifying Brown as the primary defensive tone-setter for the squad, James emphasized that Edgecombe should absorb every nuance from the veteran wing.

Fueling the Fast Break Alongside Tyrese Maxey

Beyond individual defense, James highlighted the backcourt partnership between Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey, specifically focusing on how their collective speed and athleticism can fuel a high-pace transition game. James noted that successful defensive stops and forced turnovers would directly benefit the two guards in the open floor.

Mirroring Nick Nurse’s Championship Blueprint

Looking at team identity under head coach Nick Nurse, James drew a parallel to the defensive pressure deployed by the 2018-19 Toronto Raptors championship squad. That team utilized relentless ball pressure, disrupted passing lanes, and strong help defense behind Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, and Pascal Siakam.

“They put a tremendous amount of pressure on you, they cut off passing lanes, and if you beat the first line of defense, there was always another one coming to help and shut you down,” James said of the tactical blueprint he hopes to replicate in Philadelphia.

The Mental Edge and Personal Pride

At the same time, James stressed that physical tools alone will not suffice without the correct mental approach. He emphasized that defensive success ultimately relies on personal pride and a commitment to preventing opponents from exploiting individual weaknesses.

“It’s a matter of pride,” James concluded. “I’m not going to let my opponent keep exploiting my weaknesses, getting past me, or doing anything else. You have to have that pride in yourself.”
