Wattel punches ticket to Paris 100m freestyle final
At the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, French swimmer Marie Wattel secured her spot in the 100-meter freestyle final with a disciplined performance in the preliminary heats and semifinals, according to regional sports reporting from Le Dauphiné Libéré. The 29-year-old sprinter, who trains out of Montpellier and hails from Annecy, clocked a 53.98 in her preliminary heat to finish third behind the Netherlands’ Milou van Wijk, who touched the wall in 53.00. Fellow French swimmer Beryl Gastaldello also advanced with a time of 54.03, while Dutch competitor Marrit Steenbergen posted the fastest morning heat time at 52.62.
Weighing retirement after a bruising Olympic campaign
For Wattel, reaching the final represents a crucial step forward following a turbulent period in her elite career. After enduring a difficult campaign at the Paris Olympic Games where she was eliminated in the semifinals of both the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly events, the veteran competitor admitted she contemplated walking away from the sport entirely. Speaking with sports journalists about her post-Olympic mindset, Wattel recalled telling her parents that her competitive swimming career was finished immediately following her final race in Paris.

«Je crois qu’à l’issue de ma dernière course, j’ai vu mes parents et je leur ai dit que c’était terminé», she recalled, describing the emotional toll of the home Games. Wattel noted that an accumulation of injuries throughout her preparation created intense physical and mental strain, raising questions about whether enduring another quadrennial cycle of training was worth the sacrifice. Yet, after taking time to process those raw, immediate reactions, the French sprinter chose to return to the blocks for the European Championships.
Chasing a podium finish against continental rivals
In the preliminary heats in Paris, Wattel demonstrated she still possesses competitive speed, staying close to her season-best mark of 53.96 set earlier in the year at the French championships in Saint-Étienne.
