Former NBA players Royce White and Enes Kanter Freedom have announced their intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, a move that thrusts the professional women’s basketball league into the center of an intense ongoing debate regarding player eligibility and transgender athletes in women’s sports, according to hindustantimes.com.
Former NBA Players Announce Plans to Enter 2027 WNBA Draft
The announcements follow recent public discussions sparked by Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham voicing opposition to transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, which subsequently unleashed a broader debate involving coaches, media figures, and right-wing social media influencers, as reported by Pennlive and sports.yahoo.com.
Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White Issue Declarations
Enes Kanter Freedom, an 11-year NBA veteran center who played for teams including the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers, and Boston Celtics, released a video statement on X declaring himself a WNBA prospect, stating that he and his team examined the league’s criteria surrounding self-identification and inclusion.
After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I am officially declaring myself a WNBA prospect,
Freedom said in his video, according to Pennlive. If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.
Hours later, Royce White told Fox News Digital that he also planned to enter the 2027 draft. White, a 6-foot-8, 260-pound former first-round pick selected 16th overall by the Houston Rockets in the 2012 NBA Draft, stated during his interview, I’m transgender. I’m a woman. I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for purpose of basketball, professional basketball, so I’ll be declaring for the WNBA Draft in 2027 as well.
League Rules, Union Stance, and Unclear Eligibility
Neither man has been ruled eligible by the WNBA, and the league has not publicly explained how it would assess their eligibility or issued a definitive statement outlining standards for athletes in their situation. The league’s collective bargaining agreement specifies that only women can play in the league, and no transgender or male player has ever played in the WNBA.

The WNBA Players Association addressed the broader controversy by stating that it embraces justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
while opposing the targeting or demonization of transgender people, though the union did not set out specific eligibility rules.
Player Backgrounds and Potential Legal Challenges
White stated that he intends to pursue the opportunity unless the league establishes a clear rule preventing men from playing in the women’s league, and indicated he would consider legal action if denied participation, framing potential rejection as a discrimination issue. White also noted that he would want to play for the Minnesota Lynx and use the team’s women’s locker room if he made the roster. In addition to his basketball career, White played college basketball at Iowa State University and is involved in Republican politics, having run in Minnesota’s 2024 Senate election and its August 11 Republican primary.
Freedom, who became an American citizen in 2021 and added “Freedom” to his name, has previously drawn significant attention for his political activism and criticism of the Chinese government during and after his NBA career.
