J Batt will officially begin his tenure as the University of Kentucky’s new athletics director and CEO of Champions Blue LLC on July 28, 2026. The move concludes a period of uncertainty regarding his transition from Michigan State University to Lexington. UK originally announced Batt’s hiring on June 15, at which time the university stated he would start no earlier than July 1. However, his start date remained in flux as legal teams negotiated the terms of his departure from the Spartans.
Financial Terms of the Michigan State University Buyout
The transition of J Batt from Michigan State to Kentucky involves a $3.95 million buyout, a figure finalized after negotiations between the two universities’ legal departments. This payment will be distributed between now and July 1, 2027, according to the University of Kentucky’s press release.

The final sum represents a compromise. Batt’s contract initially listed his buyout at $5 million if he left the school before July 1, 2027. That agreement contained a clause that would have cut the penalty in half if Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz was no longer president. Guskiewicz announced in May that he was leaving Michigan State for Clemson; however, on July 6, Guskiewicz announced he had changed his mind and would remain at Michigan State on a new five-year, $5 million contract. Had Guskiewicz followed through with his departure to Clemson, Batt’s buyout would have been reduced, but his decision to stay necessitated the negotiation of the $3.95 million settlement.

Leadership Transition at Michigan State
With Batt’s departure date set, Michigan State has moved to fill the vacancy. On July 10, the university announced the appointment of Jon Palumbo as interim athletic director, effective immediately. Palumbo previously served as the university’s executive deputy athletic director, chief operating officer, and CEO of Spartan Ventures. Michigan State Athletics noted on social media that over the past year, Palumbo has played a key role in the innovation and advancement of the department.

During his tenure at Michigan State, Batt helped lock down a $401 million donation from Greg and Dawn Williams, with $390 million of that total directed to Michigan State athletics. President Guskiewicz had recruited Batt from the ACC in 2025, and the two worked in lockstep regarding fundraising efforts. Their professional relationship dates back to their time at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where Guskiewicz led concussion research while Batt served as a graduate assistant on the soccer team. Batt, who was a goalkeeper, helped that team win a national championship in 2001.

Emily Guerrant, MSU Vice President of Communications and spokesperson, confirmed that Batt remained an active employee of Michigan State throughout the negotiation period. “I can just say that he has continued to be an employee of Michigan State, and has shown up for work, and now we have an end date that we’re working towards for him to make the transition to the University of Kentucky,” Guerrant said.
Outlook for the University of Kentucky Athletics
Batt joins Kentucky to succeed longtime athletics director Mitch Barnhart, whose tenure concluded on June 30. Barnhart is set to receive over $3 million over the course of three years as part of his settlement agreement. Until Batt arrives in Lexington on July 28, the University of Kentucky president’s office will retain oversight of the athletics department. No interim athletics director has been named by the university.

In a press release, Batt expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, citing the university’s institutional alignment and the foundation established by his predecessor. “From my first discussions with President Capilouto and others at UK, I was certain that this is the absolute right opportunity for us,” Batt said. “Kentucky’s storied history, the opportunity to serve the best fans in the country, the University’s strong institutional alignment and innovative mindset, and the foundation of excellence established by Mitch Barnhart and the athletics department make UK an ideal destination.”
Batt added that he believes the department is “well positioned for continued success in the shifting college athletics landscape.” He will continue his transition process in the coming weeks before officially hitting the ground running in Lexington later this month.
