Paralympic Legend Zebastian Modin Switches Focus to Biathlon for New Career Spark

Zebastian Modin Trades Cross-Country Skiing for Biathlon

Zebastian Modin, Sweden’s most decorated winter paralympian, is officially pivoting his athletic career from cross-country skiing to biathlon ahead of the upcoming winter season, according to Expressen.

The 32-year-old multi-medalist secured ten Paralympic medals in cross-country skiing across five appearances. He welcomed his first child with partner Matilda over the summer and made the decision following a period of reflection after the Paralympic Games, seeking a fresh challenge.

Chasing Renewed Motivation After Five Games

The transition brings an end to years of weighing a full-time switch. Modin explained that while he had previously competed sporadically in biathlon events simply to secure additional race opportunities alongside his cross-country schedule, he had never dedicated himself fully to the discipline due to a lack of structured parasport programs and coaching support.

Speaking to SVT Sport, Modin noted that he had struggled with waning enthusiasm in recent years. Reflecting on his career trajectory, Modin told Expressen that he needed a change to maintain his competitive edge, noting that he had not felt the final spark required at the elite level.

Joining Forces With the National Biathlon Team

Based in Östersund, Modin reached out to the Swedish Biathlon Federation to explore a potential integration.

Despite not belonging directly to their organizational structure, national team head coach Johannes Lukas welcomed the veteran athlete into a local training group to assist with shooting technique and training architecture, as reported by Expressen. Modin described the collaboration as a significant motivational boost, highlighting the value of having a structured plan and direct dialogue with Lukas. The partnership will expand in October when Modin joins the national biathlon team for a training camp in Ruhpolding, Germany.

Embracing Fatherhood and Elite Training in Östersund

The career pivot coincides with major changes in Modin’s personal life. He and his partner Matilda welcomed their son, Otto, in the summer.

Modin told SVT Sport that fatherhood has provided a fresh perspective on priorities without hindering his training routine. Despite the adjustments required by parenthood, Modin reported that training sessions have proceeded smoothly and that his family life in Östersund has offered a positive grounding effect as he prepares for his first full biathlon season.
