Global Carbon Emissions Reach Record High Despite Climate Pledges
New data released today by the Global Carbon Project shows that global carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions are set to hit a record 43.5 billion tons in 2023, marking the first time emissions have surpassed 40 billion tons annually. The report, published in Nature, warns that current climate pledges are insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), fossil fuel use remains the dominant driver of emissions, contributing over 75% of total CO₂ output. The IEA warns that without immediate and drastic reductions, emissions could rise by over 2% by 2030.
China remains the largest emitter, accounting for 31% of global emissions, followed by the United States (14%) and India (7%). The European Union, despite its green energy investments, still contributes around 7% of global emissions.
We need to cut emissions by nearly half by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement targets." The report highlights that renewable energy growth—while accelerating—is not keeping pace with fossil fuel expansion.
In related news, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reported that 120 countries have submitted updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), but only 30 of them align with the 1.5°C goal. The gap between current policies and climate goals remains “staggering,” according to UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.
Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that atmospheric CO₂ concentrations reached 420 parts per million (ppm) in 2022, the highest level in 800,000 years. The WMO warns that CO₂ levels continue to rise at an accelerated rate.
Industry leaders, including those from the oil and gas sector, have faced increasing pressure to adopt net-zero commitments. However, only about 20% of global oil production is covered by net-zero pledges, leaving a significant portion of emissions unaddressed.
