Shortly after, Emily Herrera of the Colegio Calasanz added a second silver medal to the region’s tally, finishing as the runner-up in a closely contested -40 kilogram bout.

Mixed Results for Basketball Teams

The basketball tournament has presented a varied start for the Colegio Santa Teresa de Jesús de Illapel. In the women’s division, the team secured a 52-42 victory over the representative side from Tarapacá during their opening match at the Polideportivo Renato Raggio.

The men’s squad faced a more difficult path, narrowly losing their opening game 80-72 against the team from Maule at the Fortín Prat venue in Valparaíso. The Illapel side remains in contention as they prepare for upcoming group stage matches against Arica y Parinacota and the host team from Valparaíso.

Ongoing Competition in Swimming and Handball

Regional athletes continue to participate in other sports as the national games progress. Swimmers from the region have begun their initial qualifying rounds at the Polideportivo Renato Raggio, aiming to secure spots in the upcoming finals.

In handball, the region’s hopes rest on the women’s team from the Colegio San Viator and the men’s team from the Colegio Amazing Grace of Coquimbo. These squads are scheduled to play across various venues in Viña del Mar, Playa Ancha, Villa Alemana, and Rodelillo. Both teams are currently working through the preliminary phases of the tournament to remain in the running for the final stages.
