Former Nigerian International Michael Eneramo Dies Suddenly During Match at Age 40

Former Nigeria international striker Michael Eneramo has died at the age of 40 after collapsing during a friendly match in Kaduna, Nigeria.

The Nigerian Football Federation confirmed that Eneramo suffered a cardiac arrest five minutes into the second half of the game played on Friday morning in Ungwan Yelwa, Kaduna State.

Eneramo, who earned the nickname “The Tank” during his playing days, made 10 appearances for the Nigeria national team between 2009 and 2011, scoring three international goals.

He debuted for the Super Eagles against Jamaica in February 2009 and scored his first international goal three months later against Ireland in another friendly fixture.

Born on November 26, 1985, in Kaduna, Eneramo began his professional career with Lobi Stars before moving to Espérance Sportive de Tunis in 2004, where he became a fan favorite and helped the club win multiple domestic titles.

During his time in Tunisia, Eneramo scored 51 goals in 86 appearances for Espérance Tunis, including contributing to their league and cup double in 2007.

His career also included loan spells with USM Alger and Al-Shabab, followed by moves to Turkish clubs Sivasspor, Beşiktaş, and İstanbul Başakşehir.

Eneramo had two separate stints with Sivasspor, scoring 29 goals in 77 appearances during his first spell and adding one goal in 13 games during his return in 2015.

He briefly played for Beşiktaş in the 2013–14 season, making four appearances and scoring one goal before being loaned to Karabükspor.

Later in his career, Eneramo had short spells with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia and Türk Ocağı Limasol in Cyprus before retiring from professional football.

Throughout his club career, Eneramo made a total of 262 appearances and scored 110 goals across leagues in Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Cyprus.

The Nigerian Football Federation expressed deep sorrow over his passing, with general secretary Mohammed Sanusi stating, “This is devastating. I am short of words at this moment.”

Eneramo had turned down an opportunity to represent Tunisia internationally despite his successful club career there, choosing instead to play for Nigeria.

He is remembered as a powerful striker known for his physical presence and goal-scoring ability, particularly during his peak years in North Africa.

As of now, no further details about memorial arrangements or tributes have been officially released by football authorities or his family.

The incident adds to growing concerns about player safety and cardiac health in football, following several similar on-field medical emergencies in recent years.

Fans and former teammates have begun sharing tributes online, remembering Eneramo not only for his contributions on the pitch but also for his professionalism and character off it.

Archysport will continue to monitor official channels for any updates regarding funeral arrangements or commemorative matches in his honor.

In the meantime, the football community mourns the loss of a dedicated professional who represented his country with pride and left a lasting impression wherever he played.

Michael Eneramo is survived by his family, though specific details have not been made public at this time.

His legacy as a Nigerian footballer who achieved success abroad although remaining committed to his national team will be remembered by fans across generations.
