Denmark has maintained its stranglehold on the European badminton mixed doubles title, as Alexandra Bøje and Mathias Christiansen captured the gold medal on Saturday. In a high-stakes final that saw momentum swing before the Danes asserted control, the pair defeated England’s Callum Hemming and Estelle van Leeuwen in straight sets, 21-19, 21-14.

The victory marks the first career European Championship gold for both Bøje and Christiansen, providing a crowning achievement for a partnership that entered the tournament as the second seeds. Christiansen’s resume is extensive, having secured silver medals at the European Championships in 2018, and 2024. He too holds bronze medals from the 2016, 2017, and 2021 European Championships, as well as a bronze from the 2023 European Games. His career highlights also include being part of the winning Danish team at the 2016 Thomas Cup and representing his country at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Entering the 2026 championships in Huelva, Christiansen and Bøje were ranked world No. 8 in mixed doubles as of late March. This gold medal serves as a significant validation of their current form and partnership.

Danish Dominance Continues Into Sunday

While Bøje and Christiansen have already secured their triumph, the Danish contingent remains heavily featured in the remaining schedule. The momentum from Saturday carries into Sunday, with two more Danes fighting for gold in the singles categories.

Anders Antonsen has punched his ticket to the men’s final after a commanding performance in his semifinal. Antonsen dominated his opponent, winning the first set 21-18 and the second 21-13 to advance. He is set to face Christo Popov for the title.

In the women’s draw, Line Kjærsfeldt has also reached the final, where she will battle Kirsty Gilmour.
