Suzuka, Japan – Pierre Gasly of Alpine and Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing engaged in a captivating, multi-lap battle for seventh place during Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. While Gasly ultimately held off the reigning world champion, the duel provided a thrilling spectacle for fans and underscored Alpine’s progress this season. The race, held at the iconic Suzuka International Racing Course, saw Gasly consistently fend off Verstappen’s advances, even eliciting a wry wave from the Red Bull driver after a particularly swift pass by the Alpine.
Gasly finished the race in seventh position, a result he described as the maximum achievable on the day. “The top six was out of reach, but at the same time we finished only seven seconds behind Lewis [Hamilton], which is a very positive sign for me,” Gasly reflected after the race. “And too, we were 19 seconds ahead of Liam [Lawson] in ninth, so we were clearly in the better group. And yes, as I said, it was a pretty intense race.”
Verstappen’s Pursuit and Gasly’s Defense
The contest between Gasly and Verstappen became a focal point of the Grand Prix, with Verstappen, starting from 11th on the grid, steadily closing the gap to the Alpine. However, Gasly and the Alpine team demonstrated strong pace at Suzuka, proving a challenging target for the Red Bull driver. Verstappen attempted several overtakes in the closing stages of the race, but Gasly skillfully defended his position.
“We all know that Max never gives up and he put a lot of pressure on for 28 laps,” Gasly explained. “We were strong in different parts of the circuit, so that didn’t make my life uncomplicated.” Gasly detailed his strategic approach to managing the race, focusing on key sections of the track. “Every lap towards Turn 16, making sure it was good in Turn 1, exploiting the gaps after Sector 1 – he was very strong in Turn 11, so I had to manage my battery smartly as soon as he got closer. I think we managed it pretty well but it was definitely intense.”
The interaction between the two drivers, particularly Verstappen’s wave after being overtaken on the straight, quickly became a talking point. Verstappen later explained his gesture, revealing it was a playful acknowledgement of the difficulty in passing Gasly due to battery management. According to GPblog.com, Verstappen stated he was “like, ‘observe you later, I’ll try again in three laps when my battery is full.’”
A Special Battle for Gasly
For Gasly, the battle held added significance, as Verstappen was his teammate at Red Bull Racing in 2019. “It’s not every weekend you get the chance to fight with a four-time world champion, so I’m happy to be in that position,” Gasly said. “I really enjoyed the race because there’s extra pressure involved. There’s more at stake, especially when you know who you’re fighting against. And I know that I perform at my best in those kinds of races.”
Gasly emphasized the positive momentum for Alpine, highlighting their improved performance compared to last year. “I’m very satisfied: the pace was good and we were clearly faster than the rest of the midfield. A good start, P7, and the safety car didn’t even play to our advantage, as I had a three-to-four-second lead on Max. But it did make it more exciting,” he concluded.
The result in Japan marks a strong showing for Gasly and Alpine, with the Frenchman now eighth in the Drivers’ Championship standings. This performance follows a sixth-place finish in Shanghai and demonstrates the team’s consistent progress. The team’s ability to compete with the frontrunners, even if briefly, signals a positive trajectory for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Verstappen’s eighth-place finish, while not a podium result, underscores the competitive nature of the current Formula 1 landscape. He acknowledged the require for improvement, as reported by SPORTbible, stating, “We have function to do.”
