Vallejo Ends 20-Year Drought for Paraguayan Tennis in Houston

HOUSTON – Daniel Vallejo of Paraguay has broken a 20-year drought for his country on the ATP Tour, securing a significant victory at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. Vallejo, currently ranked No. 101 in the world, defeated local favorite Zachary Svajda 6-1, 6-4 in just 61 minutes on Monday, marking his second career ATP Tour win.

This win is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first time a Paraguayan player has won more than one main draw match at an ATP Tour event in a single season since Ramón Delgado achieved the feat in 2006. It’s also the first time a Paraguayan has registered a win at this tournament since Delgado’s appearance in 2000, when the event was held in Orlando.

Vallejo’s performance was dominant, losing only one game on his serve and breaking Svajda’s serve four times. This victory marks his fifth win against a player ranked within the Top 100.

The young Paraguayan has enjoyed a successful 2026 thus far, having also claimed titles at the Challenger events in Itajai and Concepción. His win in Houston has already yielded a reward, boosting his live ranking to No. 92.

Next up for Vallejo is a challenging second-round matchup against Tommy Paul, the No. 21 ranked player and fourth seed. This will be Vallejo’s first encounter with a player ranked inside the Top 70.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Mackenzie McDonald scored an upset victory over defending champion Jenson Brooksby, winning 6-4, 6-2. McDonald will face Thiago Tirante in the second round, after Tirante defeated Colton Smith 6-0, 6-3. Ben Shelton will also advance, facing Zhizhen Zhang, who overcame Jack Pinnington Jones 6-1, 6-3.

In other results, Yannick Hanfmann secured a win in Marrakech, defeating Jesper de Jong 7-6(6), 6-4 at the Grand Prix Hassan II. Hanfmann will face local player Karim Bennani in the second round, who achieved his first ATP Tour main draw win on Monday. Taha Baadi also secured a victory for the home crowd, defeating Aleksandar Vukic and will face Corentin Moutet in the next round.

The Tiriac Open presented by UniCredit Bank in Bucharest is also underway, with matches beginning on Tuesday. Spanish player Pedro Martínez will face Daniel Altmaier, while Argentinians Sebastián Báez and Mariano Navone will also be in action. Roberto Bautista Agut will also begin his campaign against Titouan Droguet.

Vallejo’s success in Houston represents a significant milestone for Paraguayan tennis, and his upcoming match against Tommy Paul will be a crucial test as he continues his ascent on the ATP Tour. The young player’s form this year suggests he is a rising star to watch.
