Kneževi Vinogradi, Croatia – A recent initiative aimed at fostering cross-border collaboration and youth development in football has officially kicked off in eastern Croatia. The “Sport without borders: Developing youth football together” project, valued at nearly 200,000 euros, will bring together young players from Croatia and Hungary, providing them with enhanced training opportunities and a platform for friendly competition.
The project, spearheaded by the Municipality of Kneževi Vinogradi, partners with Croatia’s Nogometna škola NK Borac (NK Borac Football School) and Hungary’s Mohácsi Torna Egylet 1888. The initiative is designed to run for one year, with 80 percent of the funding sourced from the European Union through the Interreg program, a testament to its long-term potential, according to project manager Ines Palko Tatai.
Building Bridges Through Football
The core objective of the project is to engage over 200 children and young adults from both sides of the border. This will be achieved through a series of joint training sessions, football camps, and tournaments, all designed to elevate the quality of football development within the participating clubs. The project isn’t just about improving skills on the pitch; it’s about building relationships and fostering understanding between young people from different cultures.
A key component of the initiative involves the introduction of modern technology to enhance player development. The project will procure cameras for detailed match analysis and the Catapult system, which utilizes GPS-enabled vests to track players’ physical performance metrics. According to Attila Sebestyén, head of the football department at Mohácsi Torna Egylet 1888, this technology will allow for “training to be individually tailored to each player,” optimizing their development and maximizing their potential.
International Borac Cup to Showcase Regional Talent
Ivica Plantosar, President of Nogometna škola NK Borac, emphasized the importance of coach and player education, facilitated by licensed professionals. He also announced the upcoming three-day International Borac Cup, an under-11 tournament that will feature teams from Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia, Slovenia, and, for the first time, Austria. A significant portion – 52,000 euros – of NK Borac’s funding from the project will be allocated to organizing this expanded competition.
The International Borac Cup represents a significant step in broadening the project’s reach and providing a competitive platform for young players from across the region. It’s a clear demonstration of the project’s commitment to not only developing local talent but also fostering a wider network of collaboration, and exchange.
Strengthening Cross-Border Cooperation
Joint camps and tournaments are expected to further solidify the existing cooperation between the communities of Baranja (Croatia) and Mohács (Hungary). Sebestyén stated, “It is in everyone’s interest to encourage children to participate in sports,” highlighting the shared belief in the positive impact of sports on youth development. Plantosar added that the project will focus on “monitoring the development of each individual,” ensuring that every participant benefits from the initiative.
Following an initial friendly match between teams from both countries, it was evident that football is serving as a powerful bridge between the two communities. The combination of collaborative training, cutting-edge technology, and expert guidance is poised to provide these young athletes with a pathway to both sporting and personal growth.
For those unfamiliar with the region, Kneževi Vinogradi is located in the Osječko-baranjska County of Croatia, near the Hungarian border. The area is known for its vineyards and agricultural lands, and this project represents a significant investment in its youth and future. The Interreg program, which provides the majority of the funding, is a European Union initiative designed to promote cooperation between regions across borders.
What’s Next for the Project?
The project is now fully underway, with training sessions and planning for the International Borac Cup already in progress. The next major milestone will be the commencement of the tournament, scheduled to take place later this year. Organizers will continue to monitor the project’s progress and share updates on its impact on the participating communities.
Fans and supporters can stay updated on the project’s progress through the Municipality of Kneževi Vinogradi’s official website: https://knezevi-vinogradi.hr/. Further details about the International Borac Cup will be released in the coming months.
