Léon Marchand Eyes Historic Six Gold Medals at LA 2028 After Freestyle Breakthrough

French swimming star Léon Marchand is evaluating a demanding program for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles that could include up to six individual gold medal events, according to reports from Saint-Denis and sporting authorities.

An Unprecedented Six-Gold Ambition in Los Angeles

Following a standout performance at the European Championships in Saint-Denis, discussions have turned to whether Marchand can target an unprecedented six individual titles at the next Summer Games.

Marchand expanded his repertoire into freestyle events due to an adductor injury preventing him from competing in breaststroke and individual medley races. No swimmer in Olympic history—not Mark Spitz nor Michael Phelps—has ever secured six individual gold medals at a single Games.

Freestyle Breakthroughs in Saint-Denis

During the competition in Saint-Denis, Marchand posted the sixth-fastest time in history in the 200-meter freestyle with a mark of 1 minute, 43.76 seconds, according to sporting coverage.

He followed that effort by claiming the European title and setting a French record in the 400-meter freestyle at 3 minutes, 43.14 seconds.

“I’ve found my thing with the crawl,” Marchand said following the races, noting technical improvements in his stroke and power developed over the preceding two years.

Formidable Rivals Await on the World Stage

Despite the historic potential of a six-event program, swimming analysts and officials urge caution regarding the depth of international competition.

Alain Bernard pointed to formidable rivals in those distances, noting that 200-meter freestyle leader David Popovici and 400-meter freestyle world record holder and Olympic champion Lukas Märtens present significant challenges. Märtens remains a top contender despite fatigue down the stretch in Saint-Denis.

Marchand himself has downplayed immediate expectations of dominating the freestyle events globally.

“I am still far from the best world level,” Marchand said, pointing out that competitors like Sam Short and Märtens had posted faster times under heavy racing loads while he benefited from three days of rest during the meet.

Logistics and the Road to 2028

The operational feasibility of the schedule at the Los Angeles Games appears relatively accommodating, with only the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle finals overlapping on the same day, based on preliminary program analysis.

Denis Auguin, the national technical director, noted that Marchand’s primary hurdle is not his athletic capability but rather narrowing down an overwhelmingly versatile race program. Marchand confirmed he is taking a cautious approach while monitoring his recovery and addressing his adductor injury before committing fully to a slate that could span both freestyle and traditional strokes.

Marchand’s upcoming competitive schedule includes the short-course World Championships in Beijing this December, followed by meets in Budapest next year.
