DUNDEE, SCOTLAND – The Czech Republic Under-21 team secured a valuable point on the road Tuesday, battling to a 0-0 draw against Scotland in a UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying match. While a victory would have been preferred, the result keeps the “Lvíčata” (Young Lions) firmly in contention for a spot in the tournament, and head coach Michal Bílek emphasized the importance of maintaining their position in a tightly contested Group B. The team now turns its attention to a Tuesday clash against Group B’s bottom side, Gibraltar, in Chomutov.
The qualifying campaign is crucial, as the winners of the nine groups, along with the best-performing runner-up, will automatically advance to the European Championship in Albania and Serbia. The remaining eight second-place teams will enter a playoff round to determine the final four participants. Adding another layer of significance, qualification for the tournament also carries implications for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
“We wanted to win, but a point away from home is a good result, and we’re glad we kept Scotland below us in the table,” Bílek said following the match, as reported by the Czech Football Association. “The situation in the group remains open. Now, we clearly want to win our next match against Gibraltar.”
The match at Dens Park in Dundee was a largely open affair, with both sides creating opportunities. In the 15th minute, Czech goalkeeper Koutný was forced to build two saves in quick succession to deny Lawrence’s attempt. Shortly after, Ambros came close for the Czechs, sending a free kick just centimeters wide of the Scottish goal.
The first half saw Vojta arrive closest to breaking the deadlock for the Czech Republic, but his header was cleared off the line by Tod. Scotland responded with a dangerous attack of their own, but Koutný intervened to thwart a threatening effort from a hesitant Čoudek.
Scottish manager Gemmill made three substitutions at halftime, injecting fresh energy into his team. In the 53rd minute, Stewart had a golden opportunity to grant Scotland the lead, but headed his chance wide of the goal. At the other end, Ambros once again tested Adams in the Scottish net.
The final half-hour saw the Czechs apply some pressure, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances. A late opportunity fell to substitute Šín in the 87th minute, but his powerful shot from a turn was parried over the bar by Adams.
Bílek will be pleased with his team’s fourth clean sheet of the qualifying campaign, a feat aided by the debut of defender Lissah, who plays for Falkirk in the Scottish League and played the full 90 minutes. The manager highlighted the team’s tactical approach, noting their attempts to shoot from distance.
“We had planned to try shooting from midfield, and we did that quite well, having a few dangerous shots,” Bílek explained. “We also wanted to get behind their defense, which we tried to do, but the opponent focused a lot on defense, and it wasn’t easy to get through.”
The Czech Republic holds the head-to-head advantage over Scotland, having defeated them 2-0 in Prague earlier in the qualifying campaign. However, Portugal currently leads Group B with a five-point cushion and appears well-positioned to secure automatic qualification.

The draw with Scotland marks the third consecutive qualifying match without a win for Bílek’s side. However, the upcoming fixture against Gibraltar presents an opportunity to regain momentum and solidify their position in the group. The match in Chomutov will be a crucial test for the Young Lions as they continue their pursuit of a place at the European Championship and potentially the Olympic Games.
