Community Football Pitch Revitalized in Maccagnolo: A Hub for Inclusion & Sport

A collaborative effort between the local municipality, the San Donato in Maccagnolo parish, and the Italian Sports Center (Centro Sportivo Italiano) is set to breathe new life into a community football pitch on Via Ferdinando Magellano. The project aims to transform the municipal facility into a versatile hub for social inclusion and urban regeneration, fostering a stronger sense of community within the neighborhood.

The initiative will be spearheaded by a committee of young volunteers from the local oratory, tasked with planning space usage, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment, promoting activities, and coordinating access schedules with the municipal administration. This youth-led approach underscores a commitment to empowering the next generation and fostering civic responsibility.

“We are very pleased to see a municipal structure finally being enhanced,” stated Assessor Federico Scapecchi. “Access will be free of charge, a model that will encourage interaction between different generations and the multicultural integration of citizens, including foreigners. Sport, when expressed as a universal language of civic coexistence, once again confirms its full potential.”

The year-long project will offer a diverse range of activities, coordinated by a certified coach, designed to cater to all age groups and abilities. These include age-appropriate sports programs for children to promote healthy physical development, gymnastics sessions for adults, and physical activity programs tailored for senior citizens. Beyond athletics, the revitalized space will host after-school programs and summer camps, providing educational support and recreational opportunities for local youth.

The plans also include designated areas for volleyball and five-a-side football (calcetto), as well as the potential to host various events and performances, extending the pitch’s utility beyond traditional sporting activities. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a vibrant community space that caters to a wide range of interests and needs.

Scapecchi emphasized the project’s broader impact, stating, “Strengthening the sense of community and combating the isolation of minors and the elderly is combined in this case with the commendable recovery of an area for which we, as an administration, have already restored the goals and fencing. It is pleasing to note that young people are taking on these roles of responsibility and active stewardship.”

Parish priest Severe Boukaka echoed this sentiment, envisioning the space as a welcoming environment for the oratory and parish activities, as well as for children attending catechism and after-school programs. “But above all, we conceive it not as an island unto itself, but as something open and inclusive,” he added.

Valerio Giunti of the Italian Sports Center (CIS) reinforced the educational value of sport, stating, “We intend to reaffirm that sport has an educational value second to none.” This shared belief in the power of sport to foster personal growth and social cohesion is a driving force behind the project.

The revitalization of the Maccagnolo football pitch represents a significant investment in the local community, promising to provide a safe, inclusive, and vibrant space for residents of all ages. The project’s emphasis on youth leadership, free access, and diverse programming underscores a commitment to creating a truly community-centered facility.

For those interested in following the progress of the revitalization, updates will be provided by the Comune di San Donato Milanese. The project is expected to be completed within one year, with the first activities scheduled to begin shortly thereafter. This initiative serves as a model for how collaborative partnerships can transform underutilized spaces into valuable community assets.

The next step in the project involves finalizing the schedule of activities and coordinating with local schools and organizations to promote participation. Residents are encouraged to share their ideas and suggestions for how the space can best serve the community’s needs.
