PARIS – Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly targeting Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi, currently playing for SC Freiburg, as a potential reinforcement for next season. The 20-year-old has attracted attention from several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich, with Freiburg setting a price tag of €30 million for the promising talent.
Last summer, PSG opted against adding to their midfield options following their Ligue 1 triumph, a decision that club officials now acknowledge may have been premature. Injuries to key players like Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves this season have highlighted the need for additional depth in that area, prompting the club to prioritize a midfield signing in the upcoming transfer window.
PSG’s recruitment strategy under Luis Campos has increasingly focused on identifying young players with high potential, allowing them to develop under the guidance of manager Luis Enrique. Manzambi fits this profile, having quickly established himself as a key player for Freiburg since joining from Servette in January 2023. According to reports from Germany’s Blick, both PSG and Bayern Munich are actively pursuing the Swiss international.
Manzambi, a Geneva native, has been in impressive form for Freiburg, where his contract runs until June 2030. His performances have drawn the attention of several other European clubs, including Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Galatasaray, according to Transfermarkt. Although, a direct competition between PSG and Bayern Munich appears to be developing.
Freiburg recognizes Manzambi’s value and has set a transfer fee of €30 million. This would represent a significant profit for the German club, having acquired the player for a relatively small fee during his youth development. Manzambi’s rapid ascent has been remarkable; he’s turn into a standout performer in the Bundesliga, consistently winning duels and creating scoring opportunities.
Data Foot reports that Manzambi has won more offensive duels than any other midfielder in Europe’s top five leagues. The CIES Football Observatory ranks him sixth among under-21 players in creating chances across 55 top championships, alongside rising stars like Lamine Yamal (Barcelona), Arda Güler (Real Madrid), and Kenan Yildiz (Juventus). Freiburg board member Jochen Saier acknowledged Manzambi’s development, stating, “Johan has continuously developed, which allows him to stand out.”
Manzambi’s versatility is a key asset. He is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder, or even on the wing, making him a particularly attractive prospect for Luis Enrique, who favors players who can occupy multiple positions. Since earning his first senior cap with Switzerland in June 2025, Manzambi has accumulated six international appearances.
The potential transfer highlights PSG’s continued ambition to build a squad capable of competing for top honors in both domestic and European competitions. Whereas the €30 million price tag appears reasonable given Manzambi’s potential, the competition from Bayern Munich and other clubs could drive up the fee. Freiburg is likely to seek the highest possible price for their prized asset, potentially leading to a bidding war.
The situation bears watching as the summer transfer window approaches. PSG’s ability to secure Manzambi’s signature could significantly strengthen their midfield options and provide Luis Enrique with greater tactical flexibility. The coming months will determine whether the French champions can successfully land one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders.
Next up for PSG is a Ligue 1 clash against Lyon on April 12th (21:00 CET). The team will be looking to maintain their position at the top of the league table as they continue to balance domestic commitments with their pursuit of European glory.
