Remscheid, Germany – The city of Remscheid honored its top athletes of 2025 this past Saturday, but with a change of scenery. Instead of the traditional Teo Otto Theater, the ceremony took place in a more intimate setting – the hall of the Deutsches Werkzeugmuseum (German Tool Museum). The shift in venue, described by Mayor Sven Wolf as a “real home game in a special Remscheid location,” underscored a theme of precision, passion, and the necessary tools for success.
“Because sporting success doesn’t come alone,” Wolf stated, according to reports from the event. “It requires sweat, endurance, and willpower. And in sport, We find clear rules for everyone – and fair play!” He further emphasized that these values form the foundation of Remscheid’s “colorful and strong city society,” noting the breadth of athletic participation, from individual competitors to large teams, from grassroots efforts to inclusive projects and elite performance.
The mayor likewise highlighted the crucial role of volunteers, stating, “The coaches, the groundskeepers, the excellent souls. They wash the jerseys and travel to away games on weekends. Without them, nothing works. No training. No tournament. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” This sentiment resonated throughout the event, acknowledging the often-unseen dedication that fuels local sports.
Reinhard Ulbrich, chairman of the Remscheid City Sports Association, provided some impressive figures. With 72 sports clubs and 23,000 members, alongside 38 company sports clubs and 1,100 members, sport is, according to Ulbrich, “the largest civic movement” in the city, sustained by countless volunteers and supported by the city administration.
The awards ceremony itself recognized a diverse range of achievements. Jan Edelmann of LG Remscheid was named Youth Athlete of 2025 after qualifying for the German Youth Championships (under 18) and becoming Vice-Champion of the North Rhine Athletics Association. Kim Lea Müller excelled in BMX freestyle, securing first place at both the European and German Championships. Badminton player Andreas Zimmermann (over 30, RTV) achieved a remarkable double, winning first place in the Badminton World Championship (doubles) and third place in the mixed event. Notably, he also participated for the first time in the World Transplant Games.
Team accolades went to the Special Hockey team of RTB, with eight of its 14 players representing the national team. The team’s first squad currently leads the first division, while the second team holds the top spot in the second division. The “Samo” sports bowling team of RSV continued their dominance, winning the German Championship for the fourth consecutive time in 2025 and adding a first-place finish at the World Cup in Brazil.
Beyond athletic prowess, the event also honored dedicated volunteers. Bianka Keuchel, a trainer at LTV since 1999, Jusuf Visnjic, chairman and trainer of the Bergisches Boxclub Remscheid since 2012, and Gerd Hörster, a 70-year member of the Lenneper Schützenverein (shooting club) who continues to compete in championships at age 92, were all recognized for their unwavering commitment. The Reinshagener Turnerbund also received the “Mittendrin” seal, the first Remscheid club to do so, for its dedication to promoting accessibility and inclusion in sports.
The ceremony wasn’t solely focused on awards; it also featured performances from local groups. Cheerleaders from Amboss e.V., the “Diamond” dance team from Amboss e.V., the crew from “Tanzraum Remscheid” in cooperation with “TanzTraum” e.V., and the band “Die Lennys” provided entertainment.
The choice of the Deutsches Werkzeugmuseum as the venue is particularly noteworthy. The museum, dedicated to the history of tools, subtly reinforced the message that success in any field – including sports – requires the right tools, dedication, and a commitment to precision. The museum’s connection to Remscheid’s industrial heritage added another layer of meaning to the event, highlighting the city’s long-standing tradition of craftsmanship and excellence.
This year’s celebration of Remscheid’s athletes wasn’t just about recognizing achievements; it was a powerful reminder of the values that underpin a thriving community: dedication, perseverance, volunteerism, and a commitment to inclusivity.
