French Duo Gicquel and Delrue Triumph at Orléans Masters
Orléans, France – Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue have continued their impressive form, securing the mixed doubles title at the 2026 Orléans Masters badminton tournament on Sunday, March 22nd. The French pair, currently ranked 5th in the world, defeated Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje in straight sets, 21-19, 21-13, at the Palais des Sports in Orléans.
The victory marks another significant achievement for the French duo, coming just two weeks after they reached the final of the All England Open (Super 1000) tournament. This win at the Orléans Masters, a Super 300 event, underscores their consistency on the world tour and solidifies their position among the elite mixed doubles teams.
A Hard-Fought First Set, Decisive Second
The first set proved to be a closely contested affair, with both pairs trading points and demonstrating skillful play. However, Gicquel and Delrue managed to gain the upper hand in the crucial final rallies, closing out the set 21-19. The second set saw a shift in momentum, as the French pair quickly established control and secured a decisive 21-13 victory, fueled by enthusiastic support from the home crowd.
“It was our objective to be able to string together performances like this,” Gicquel explained. “Before this tournament, every time we reached a final or won a tournament, we would lose in the first or second round afterward.” This win suggests a new level of consistency for the pair, a crucial element as they look ahead to upcoming challenges.
Tactical Mastery Over Danish Opponents
This wasn’t the first time Gicquel and Delrue have faced Christiansen and Bøje. The Danish duo had previously defeated the French pair twice towards the conclude of the 2025 season. However, in this encounter, the French team showcased a tactical solidity that highlighted their current form. “We were good today compared to what we had done against them before,” Gicquel noted. “We had beaten them in Japan, but they weren’t at their best. Today, they were better, but we posed more problems for them. They had fewer solutions than usual.”
The Orléans Masters tournament boasted a total prize pool of US$240,000, attracting top badminton talent from around the globe. The event, held annually at the Palais des Sports, is a key fixture on the BWF World Tour.
Looking Ahead: European Championships on the Horizon
With the Orléans Masters title secured, Gicquel and Delrue are now turning their attention to the European Championships, scheduled to take place in Huelva, Spain, from April 6th to 12th. Their recent performance suggests they will be strong contenders for the title. Should they maintain their current level of play, Christiansen and Bøje – or another top European pair – could very well be their final obstacle on the path to gold.
The tournament likewise saw success for other players. Alex Lanier successfully defended his men’s singles title, while Nozomi Okuhara claimed the women’s singles crown. In the men’s doubles, Hu Keyuan and Lin Xiangyi emerged victorious, and Sumire Nakade and Miyu Takahashi won the women’s doubles title.
For Gicquel and Delrue, the Orléans Masters victory represents more than just a trophy; it’s a testament to their dedication, tactical prowess, and growing confidence as one of the world’s leading mixed doubles teams. Their ability to build on recent successes will be crucial as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead on the international badminton circuit.
