VILLARREAL, Spain – Real Sociedad manager Pellegrino Matarazzo expressed frustration with his team’s performance following a 3-1 defeat to Villarreal at Estadio de la Cerámica on Friday. Beyond the result, the match brought a concerning injury to key defender Igor Zubeldia, casting a shadow over the club’s preparations for upcoming fixtures, including a crucial Copa del Rey final.
Matarazzo was critical of his side’s lack of precision and efficiency in front of goal, stating, “We lacked precision and effectiveness to be able to win. It hurts to be penalized in this way for small details, but it’s a way to learn for the future.” He acknowledged Villarreal’s clinical finishing and ability to capitalize on Real Sociedad’s errors. “They were very effective. Being punished with these errors, with these details, hurts. It’s a good way to learn,” Matarazzo said.
The early stages of the match proved particularly damaging for the visitors, falling behind 3-0 within the first 20 minutes. Matarazzo conceded that overcoming such a deficit was a significant challenge. “If you proceed down 3-0 in the first 20 minutes, it’s challenging to come back,” he explained. He similarly noted that Villarreal’s quick transitions and overall quality posed a significant threat.
Although, the most pressing concern for Real Sociedad supporters is the status of Igor Zubeldia. The defender was forced off the pitch in the 53rd minute, replaced by Caleta-Car, after sustaining a muscular injury to the posterior of his left thigh. The injury raises concerns about his availability for the Copa del Rey final, a major target for the club this season.
“We don’t know the extent of Igor’s injury yet, but yes, he has been injured,” Matarazzo confirmed. “We’ll see what the resonance imaging and other tests reveal. I hope it’s only a few days or a couple of weeks, that it’s not too long.” The manager’s words will offer a small measure of hope to fans anxious about losing a key player at a critical juncture of the season.
Adding to the team’s challenges, Gorrotxategi also requested a substitution during the match. Matarazzo explained the decision to remove him was precautionary. “We didn’t want to take any risks with him. He’s been progressing and was getting better, but after the first 45 minutes, he spoke with the doctors, and I’m clear that we don’t want to risk it. We want him back as soon as possible, but in good condition.”
Matarazzo also pinpointed a lack of sharpness in the final third as a key factor in the defeat. “They knew how to take advantage of their opportunities, we, did not. I also feel we weren’t fine in the last third of the field. Mistakes are very costly there, and they were more accurate, which is why we return home empty-handed.”
Despite the disappointing result, Matarazzo acknowledged his team’s efforts. “We didn’t have to suffer so much because the team played a great game both offensively and defensively, with clear chances, and we should have finished better.”
The defeat at La Cerámica underscores the competitive nature of La Liga and the importance of capitalizing on opportunities. Real Sociedad will need to quickly address the issues highlighted by Matarazzo and hope for positive news regarding Zubeldia’s injury as they prepare for their next challenge. The team will undoubtedly be looking to bounce back and demonstrate their capabilities in upcoming matches.
Real Sociedad’s next confirmed fixture is yet to be announced, but the club will provide updates on Zubeldia’s condition and team news as they become available. Fans can follow official club channels for the latest information.
