Biathlon: Nawrath Misses Sprint Globe, Lägreid Wins – No German Victories Yet This Season

Oslo, Norway – Eric Perrot of France has clinched the Biathlon World Cup overall title, while Germany’s Philipp Nawrath narrowly missed a podium finish at the final sprint event in Holmenkollen on Friday, effectively ending his bid for the sprint crystal ball. The competition, held in challenging conditions, saw Norway’s Sturla Holm Lägreid take the sprint victory.

Nawrath, 33, delivered a flawless shooting performance but ultimately finished eighth, 31.7 seconds off the pace needed to challenge for a medal. Having secured third place the previous week, the German biathlete was hoping for a strong finish to contend for the sprint World Cup title, but needed both a podium result and some misfortune from his rivals. Lägreid’s win sealed the small crystal ball for the Norwegian.

Perrot’s consistent performance throughout the season culminated in securing the overall World Cup title with two races still remaining. He finished third in Friday’s sprint, trailing Lägreid and fellow Frenchman Emilien Jacquelin, who took second place. Lägreid won despite one penalty, finishing in a time of [time not provided in sources], while Jacquelin was +3.9 seconds back with one penalty, and Perrot finished +4.6 seconds behind with one penalty as well.

The women’s overall title has also been decided, with Lou Jeanmonnot of France securing the victory. Jeanmonnot avenged a heartbreaking loss to Franziska Preuß in last year’s final, claiming the title on Thursday.

“The top athletes were clearly stronger today, I have to acknowledge that,” Nawrath told ZDF, acknowledging the superior performance of his competitors. He now focuses on preparing for Saturday’s pursuit race, where a strong performance will be crucial to salvage a podium finish before the season concludes.

Behind Nawrath, Philipp Horn and Justus Strelow were the next best Germans, finishing 12th and 13th respectively. Horn finished with 2 penalties and a time of +1:06.2 minutes, while Strelow had 1 penalty and finished +1:07.9 minutes behind the leader. World Cup debutant Franz Schaser impressed with a top-30 finish, completing the course with a time of +1:40.8, while Leonhard Pfund struggled on the challenging course and did not score points.

The German team is facing the prospect of completing a World Cup season without a single victory for the first time in its history. With four races remaining – Saturday’s pursuits and Sunday’s mass starts – they have a final opportunity to break the drought. The pursuit races are scheduled for Saturday at 1:45 p.m. And 4:15 p.m. Local time (UTC+2). Vanessa Voigt will be the first German woman to start the pursuit, beginning in 16th position.

The final races of the season, the mass starts, will take place on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. And 4:30 p.m. Local time (UTC+2), and will be broadcast on ZDF and Eurosport.

This season finale at Holmenkollen marks a significant moment in the Biathlon World Cup, with both the men’s and women’s overall titles decided. While the German team faces a disappointing season, the performances of young athletes like Schaser offer a glimpse of potential for the future.

The Biathlon World Cup now moves towards its conclusion, leaving fans to anticipate the upcoming events and the final results that will shape the season’s legacy.
