Kader Kohou Joins Kansas City Chiefs: Five Things to Understand

The Kansas City Chiefs added to their defensive backfield Friday, agreeing to terms with veteran cornerback Kader Kohou. The move addresses a clear need for the Super Bowl champions after losing key pieces in the secondary this offseason. But who is Kohou, and what will he bring to Kansas City? Here are five key things to know about the Chiefs’ newest addition.

A Consistent Starter for the Dolphins

The 27-year-old Kohou has established himself as a reliable player in the NFL, starting 38 games over the last four seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in 47 total games for Miami, though he unfortunately missed the entire 2025 season due to a knee injury sustained in training camp. Prior to the injury, Kohou consistently earned a starting role, logging 13 starts in 2022, 16 in 2023, and nine in 2024, demonstrating his durability and dependability when healthy.

Kohou’s impact isn’t just about availability; he’s proven capable of making plays on the ball. He recorded double-digit pass deflections in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, with exactly 10 in each year. This placed him among just 20 players league-wide to achieve that feat over those two seasons. He continued his strong play in 2024, adding eight more pass breakups and ranking sixth in the NFL in yards allowed per coverage snap. Over his first three years in Miami, Kohou amassed a total of 28 passes defended, establishing himself as one of only 12 players to record eight or more pass breakups in each season from 2022 through 2024.

Primarily a Slot Cornerback

At 5-foot-10 and 197 pounds, Kohou has primarily operated as a slot cornerback throughout his career. In 2024, he played 453 of his 708 defensive snaps in the slot. The previous season saw him cover the slot on 601 of 937 defensive snaps, and in 2022, he was in the slot for 482 of 895 defensive snaps. This versatility is valuable, but his experience in the slot is particularly noteworthy given Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s tendency to utilize his slot cornerbacks as blitzers. Kohou has experience in this area, recording at least 15 pass-rush snaps in each of his three healthy seasons and totaling 11 pressures.

An Undrafted Success Story

Kohou’s journey to the NFL is a testament to perseverance. He initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Dolphins after a successful collegiate career at Texas A&M University–Commerce. He played four years for the Lions, helping them win a Division II national championship during his redshirt freshman season in 2017. After going undrafted in 2022, Kohou impressed during the Dolphins’ offseason program and earned a spot on the roster following training camp. He quickly became a regular starter in Miami’s secondary, proving his worth despite not being selected in the NFL Draft.

Born in Côte d’Ivoire, Developed in Texas

Kohou’s story extends beyond the football field. He was born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, before moving to Euless, Texas, where he attended Trinity High School. At Trinity, he excelled in both football and track, earning first-team all-district honors after leading the district in interceptions during his senior season. His athletic abilities caught the attention of Texas A&M–Commerce, and now, years later, Kohou brings his talents to Kansas City to join the Chiefs.

The addition of Kohou provides the Chiefs with a seasoned cornerback who can contribute immediately. His experience in coverage, particularly in the slot, and his ability to generate pressure will be valuable assets as the team looks to defend its Super Bowl title. Kohou’s arrival also adds depth to a secondary that was significantly impacted by offseason departures.

The Chiefs will initiate their offseason training program on April 15th. Kohou’s participation will be closely monitored as he recovers from his ACL injury. The team has not yet announced a specific timeline for his return to full participation, but they are optimistic that he will be ready for the start of the 2026 season.
