Occident Bilbao-Bilbao: Thousands to Cycle in Popular Basque Country Ride (2024)

Bilbao, Spain – The Occident Bilbao-Bilbao cycling event is poised to kick off the cyclotourism calendar this weekend, promising another grand celebration of cycling. Organizers anticipate approximately 6,500 participants will take to the roads of the Basque Country for the 37th edition of the popular ride, known for its inclusive spirit and lack of competitive ranking.

The event, which has grown to become one of the largest cyclotourism events in Spain alongside the Quebrantahuesos and Mallorca 312, uniquely welcomes cyclists of all levels, including those using electric bikes. Registration remains open at the Zubiarte Shopping Center, conveniently located near the start line, until shortly before the first riders depart.

“We find over 5,500 already registered, and we expect a final surge as usual from those waiting to see what the weather conditions will be,” organizers stated. Participants can choose from three routes designed to cater to varying levels of fitness and ambition. The shortest route, spanning 85 kilometers, will be tackled by seasoned participants like Antonio Huguet and his son Santi, who are embarking on their fourth ride since 1998, using the same bib number each time.

The traditional route measures 115 kilometers, although the most challenging option extends to 125 kilometers with the addition of the ascent to El Vivero. The 85km route presents the climbs of Andraka and Unbe as its primary difficulties. Riders on this course will receive refreshments at the Zamudio Technological Park before continuing towards Galdakao and ultimately finishing on the Gran Vía in Bilbao. Those opting for the classic 115km route will refuel in Zamudio before heading through Artebakarra and Morga, descending into Larrabetzu, and then joining the shorter route via Galdakao.

For the most ambitious cyclists, the 125km route offers the added challenge of climbing El Vivero. The start of all three routes will be staggered in fifteen-minute intervals between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM from the Puente de Deusto (Bridge of Deusto).

Former professional cyclist Omar Fraile will officially start the race with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Fraile retired at the end of the previous season and was recognized as one of the best athletes in the Basque Country at the EL CORREO awards in January. Joining Fraile at the start will be Estibaliz Olabarri, Director of Traffic for the Basque Government, Carlos Sergio Achotegui, Director of Sports for the Provincial Council, and Marcos Muro, his counterpart from the Bilbao City Council.

Organizers have assembled a comprehensive support team of over 500 personnel to provide technical and medical assistance to participants. This includes eight Red Cross ambulances staffed with 60 medical professionals, eight additional vehicles equipped with doctors along the course, as well as signalers, volunteers, and fifty motorcycles.

Participants can purchase vests and jerseys exclusively designed for the event at the Zubiarte Shopping Center during registration. The Occident Bilbao-Bilbao is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of cycling culture and community spirit. It’s a chance for riders of all abilities to enjoy the elegant Basque landscape and the camaraderie of fellow cycling enthusiasts.

The event will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Cyclists should be aware that the start times are staggered, beginning at 8:00 AM local time (UTC+1). The race offers a unique experience for cyclists, emphasizing participation and enjoyment over competition.

Next up, cyclists will seem ahead to the upcoming cycling season and other major cyclotourism events across Europe. For those interested in participating or learning more about the Occident Bilbao-Bilbao, visit the official event website for details and updates.
