LaLiga Genuine Brings Inclusive Football to Gijón

Gijón, Spain – The Escuela de Fútbol de Mareo and El Molinón stadium were filled with excitement Saturday as representatives from clubs, players, and coaches of LaLiga Genuine gathered to kick off a special weekend dedicated to inclusive football. The event transforms Gijón into a central meeting point for the sport’s most inclusive initiatives.

“What a fantastic group of teams we have here,” commented David Guerra, Sporting’s executive vice president, upon welcoming participants. Among the clubs present were Real Racing Club de Santander, SD Eibar, Real Madrid CF, FC Andorra, Girona FC, Real Oviedo, and, of course, Real Sporting. The rojiblancos welcomed the teams first to the stadium before moving activities to the Escuela de Fútbol de Mareo.

Clemente Villaverde, president of the LaLiga Foundation, also addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude for Sporting’s hospitality. “We are delighted to be here,” he stated. Villaverde emphasized the core objective of the initiative: “to do what we always do, share the values of LaLiga Genuine to the fullest extent.” He added that Gijón is experiencing something special this weekend: “Today, Gijón is the capital of inclusion in Spain.” He also acknowledged the club’s efforts in providing care and even a cultural program for the visiting teams.

Joaquín Alonso, Sporting’s head of institutional relations, expressed the club’s pride in hosting the event. “We are very proud of what the foundation represents,” he said. He highlighted that events like this serve to showcase the values of the club, Mareo, and El Molinón. “Now you have to show us,” he playfully told the players, adding, “What we’re going to do this weekend is enjoy ourselves.”

David Guerra also recognized the example set by all the participants. “I wish there were more examples like yours, of what happens both on and off the field,” he said.

Among those present were the teams themselves. Jonathan Cereceda, coach of Real Oviedo’s Genuine team, explained that playing at Mareo “is an extra motivation,” but emphasized that the priority was to “enjoy the day and play football, which is what we like.” He believes projects like LaLiga Genuine are fundamental because they allow players to experience football “as true professionals.” “That enriches all of us,” he added.

José Antonio Montaya, a player with one of the participating teams, was more reserved in front of the microphones. “I just want to enjoy the day playing,” he said with a laugh when asked about the experience of visiting Mareo and seeing the stadium.

Players from Racing Santander also arrived. Their coach, Daniel Ríos, positively valued the project: “We see essential to give visibility and for them to be part of football, which is what they like.” Racing midfielder Aarón Martínez admitted to being nervous but very excited to play and experience the event. He even confessed that he was particularly looking forward to seeing Sporting’s dressing rooms, although he had already visited El Molinón with his parents.

Javi Gutiérrez, a forward from another participating team, was more outspoken, jokingly promising, “I don’t score any goals… but today will be the first.” He quickly clarified that his main concern was “to aid the team.”

Following the official presentation, the teams toured the stadium facilities and visited the dressing rooms. The visit concluded with a group photo on the pitch.

Thus began a weekend in Gijón where football once again demonstrates that, beyond the result, what truly matters is sharing, competing, and enjoying the game together.
